Too much dietary manganese—an essential trace mineral found in leafy green vegetables, fruits and nuts—promotes infection of the heart by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus ("staph").
Skaar and his colleagues studied the impact of dietary manganese on staph infection in a mouse model. Most of the mice that consumed a high manganese diet—about three times more manganese than normal—died after infection with staph. The investigators discovered that the animals on the high manganese diet were particularly susceptible to staph infection of the heart, which was a surprise, said Skaar, who is also professor of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology and director of the Vanderbilt Institute for Infection, Immunology and Inflammation.
What the actual odds are of getting a staph infection, I haven't the slightest idea.

I'm afraid you're right. That makes this manganese issue a bit worrisome because they're taking about dietary manganese (of course it surely would apply to manganese supplements also).

Of note
I have not consumed leafy greens, nuts or fruit for the past near 8 years since my MC dx.
and not once has low manganese come up in my nutrient requirements.

My father, Type 1 diabetic and Pancreatic Enzyme Deficiency, got staph and gangrene of his foot. Poor circulation, out of control high blood sugar and infection. His leg was amputated. Just one of the pitfalls of having diabetes.
