The physician advisor at my gastroenterologist's office recently recommended that I take Immodium -- which I had been taking each morning without much effect -- at night before bed. This change from morning to nighttime dosing has made a world of difference. After about a week, the urgency had lessened quite a bit, stool consistency is better, and the discomfort in my abdomen has gone. Hope this helps others.
Update: After a couple of months, the Imodium in the evening stopped working. My GI doc tried me on a combination of budesonide and mesalamine. That made things worse. So now we're trying budesonide alone. Fingers crossed. Hope others are doing well.
Update: Simple treatment for collagenous colitis

Hi,
Welcome to the forum. It's been a while (over a decade) since I recovered, and I did have severe diarrhea, but I agree with you. On the days when I couldn't go to work, it wasn't the diarrhea that kept me home — it was the nausea and migraines and debilitating pain. On the days that I just had diarrhea, I was always able to go to work.
Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
