Doesn't magnesium CAUSE diarrhea??
I am a newbie and am slowly trying to wade through and digest as much of the info here as I can. I see many recommendations for magnesium supplements. A few years ago I had started taking magnesium (because I read it was important for calcium absorption or something like that). Anyway, I had to stop taking it because it gave me terrible problems with bloating, gas, and diarrhea (this was before my LC problems began). So can someone tell me why magnesium is important for LC? And what do I do if it causes gastro distress?

yes there are some forms of Magnesium that are more likely to cause D issues when consummed orally or when too much is consumed at once.
Topical application of magnesium (via sprays/lotions etc) has no impact to the gut and is absorbed and used well by the body.
Magnesium Citrate is one of the best forms orally for MC'ers and tolerated quite well when taken in doses spread through out the day.
another product tolerated very well by members here is the Dr Dean ReMag product. these are highly absorbable liquid magnesium.

We can absorb only about 2 % of magnesium oxide. The 98 % that remains in the gut acts as a laxative. Never take magnesium oxide unless you need/want to take a laxative. The most easily absorbed forms for use as oral supplements are ReMag, magnesium glycinate, and magnesium citrate.

I understand your confusion as I was taking mag oxide for constipation before my LC diagnosis.
Lots of us use topical magnesium. (I love Mo Maggie Magnesium lotion. 1 tsp = 250 mg of magnesium. It isn't sticky and does not have fragrance.) Others use ReMag or Life Flow and Epson Salts soak, for example.
Magnesium glycinate I tolerate well without a laxative effect. Doctor's Best Magnesium Glycinate, ordered online was recommended on this forum and it's my mag of choice. Two pills = 200 mg. Everyone is different and defines their preferences.
It took me awhile to believe and understand the importance of magnesium and vitamin D for MC. Now I get it. While healing or in a flare, I use 500 mg of magnesium lotion daily and another 400 mg of oral. Vitamin D, at least 5000 IU a day. That can later be cut back. There's lots of helpful information on magnesium and vitamin D on this forum.

If anyone can tolerate large gel tabs, I am using the KAL Gel Tab soy free 200mg per tab along with a little ReMag and topical at times....It's the cheapest at Vitacost.com that I am finding right now.
