an update for Polly
Hi Polly,
You asked me to let you know how my various problems were working out. It's complicated! I was able to taper down to 10 mg. Prilosec and 150 Zantac per day. If I took 300 mg. of the Zantac and no Prilosec, my symptoms returned. Even with that dose, I sometimes get very mild symptoms.
I'm currently taking 400 mg. magnesium daily. The reason I haven't tried more is that I've had 3 UTIs back to back for the last month and 1/2 and have been taking antibiotics all that time. Knowing that both magnesium and antibiotics are risks for D, I've not increased the magnesium further. Is this the correct way to go?
Luckily, my D hasn't returned.
Today I'm seeing a urologist, having just finished my last round of antibiotics. I hope he doesn't put me on a low dose of them forever! I have a history of UTIs and think there's something with my anatomy that causes them. Along with the D this time.
So that's my story for anyone else who might profit from it. :) I hope you're doing well: especially Polly, Gabes, Tex and others who have coped with similar problems and have given me advice.
Thank you all so much!
Love,
Alice

herbal. It also comes in capsules but we mix I think 1/4 or 1/2 teaspoon in Mom's breakfast juice. I can't remember the dose. I have Mom on this daily.
I started getting UTI with menopause so I take a dose in water before and after sex and it has stopped the UTIs.

Thanks for your reply, Polly. The urologist wants to do several tests, one invasive. This is because I always present with blood in the urine. I have a long history of UTIs with blood. In fact, it's my second symptom, after burning pain. He says the protocol when blood is present is CT scan with contrast, x ray and cystoscopy. I don't want any of these tests, least of all the cystoscopy. Very painful. I took the mannose today for the first time. If I can go 5 days without a recurrence of the UTI, I'll be happy! Of course, I hope it will be much more.
Thanks again for your opinion.

Alice,
Have you tried green tea? https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3684790/
Perhaps add a couple of cups a day to your protocol. I find drinking it at room temperature or chilled easier than drinking it hot.

Alice have you looked at my recent thread on kidneys and creatinine? I've been doing a protocol of green tea and stinging nettle tea for the last 40 days.
Consider read up on stinging nettle tea and UTI's and also green tea and UTI's. I have not had any D from the protocol but I drink it after a meal.
How much water are you drinking a day? I'm close to a gallon as I have moderately compromised kidneys.
My theory is the green tea and the stinging nettle tea are anti inflammatory.

To all:
It's been 10 days since I finished my most recent course of antibiotics and started D mannose, and my UTI hasn't returned! I'm very happy, almost didn't say anything because I don't want to jinx it!
I haven't looked into green tea yet because I want to keep the variables at a minimum so I can properly evaluate each remedy.
I'll keep posting as I progress. I cancelled the tests and will probably not go back to that doc anyway, because I didn't like his "bedside manner."

That's great, Alice! I hope you continue symptom free.
And I just want to add here that for any of you with a dog, D mannose works great on them too. I had a female dog that had recurrent bladder infections until I started sprinkling D mannose on her food at the suggestion of her holistic vet. I worked like a charm!
