Ideas on antibiotics and probiotics?

Post by wmonique2 »

Hey friends,

I started a 7 days round of antibiotics for a nasty burn I incurred. My doc says take probiotics. My expereince with them in the past has been negative. I haven't tried them in years.

Any ideas how to take care of my gut before it triggers a flare?

Thank you,

Monique

Hi Monique
previous discussions(available via search function) SB BOullardi is proboiotic tolerated very well by D dominate MC'ers

an extended thought on this, what probiotic works best depends on the type of antiobiotic you are taking - what one are you taking?

some previous discussions that i found using search function

a very good topical option for the burn - wound healing manuka honey - there have been many science studies proving its success, especially the antibacterial properties ie using the honey topical removes the need to take antiobiotics.
Manuka honey, on the other hand, is made with pollen gathered from the flowers of the Manuka bush (a medicinal plant), and clinical trials have found this type of honey can effectively eradicate more than 250 clinical strains of bacteria, including resistant varieties such as:

MRSA (methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus)
MSSA (methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus)
VRE (vancomycin-resistant enterococci)
Compared to other types of honey, Manuka has an extra ingredient with antimicrobial qualities, called the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF). It is so called because no one has yet been able to discover the unique substance involved that gives it its extraordinary antibacterial activity. Honey releases hydrogen peroxide through an enzymatic process, which explains its general antiseptic qualities, but Active Manuka honey contains "something else" that makes it far superior to other types of honey when it comes to killing off bacteria.

Thanks Gabes,

My burn is a second degree and horrible. I have it for 10 days now and it's been hell. I've seen the doctor for it....

As for S. Boulardi, I took it years ago when I was real sick and it made me sicker.

I am taking Bactrim antibiotic which is sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim.

I am wondering if yoghourt with live probiotics will work.

yogurt wise - if you can find dairy free good quality mc safe yogurt wont hurt - albeit the probiotic content of the yogurt will only be about 10% of what you really need to counteract the impact of the antiobiotics.

Hi Monique,

Sorry about the burn. I took two courses of Bactrim during March a couple of years ago and started a third course but had to stop because of an allergic reaction to the Bactrim. I wound up with an acute magnesium deficiency that caused a lot of severe symptoms. Then I took a round of Cipro. This was all for some dental work. Anyway, I never took a probiotic — I've never taken a probiotic in my life, so I can't recommend one. I'm not sure whether they help or not, to be honest. I think that if I usually reacted negatively to them I would just pass and stay away from other people and other environments while I was finishing the antibiotic and for a couple of weeks afterward. You're not likely to get infected if you stay at home.

Love,
Tex

Hi Tex,

Thanks for your answer. Luckily I only have a one week course of antibiotics...already on day 4 and have only 3 more days.... I am scared to death from flares...I just made myself some pre- and probiotics with cabbage that I am fermenting. I will be drinking the liquid in a couple of days. Maybe that will help prevent any flare.

Thanks my friend.

Love,

Monique

Yes, that should work. You can buy Bubbies Sauerkraut at most health food stores (in the refrigerated section). It might be in all supermarkets for all I know. I only used it for a while when I was recovering, but it's good. It comes in a glass jar.

Love,
