more Magnesium supplementation information

Gabes,

I’m confused by what I’m reading online. Some suggest that the calcium to magnesium ration is 1:1, and some say 3:1.....and then there’s K2 & vit. D3 to consider.

What’s your opinion from your reading?

According to some sources, joint pain can indeed be due to insufficient magnesium. Here are a couple of articles about that:

LInda,

The 3:1 or 2:1 calcium/magnesium ratio was the old recommendation. If you believe the modern gurus, the ratio should be 1:1.

Thanks, Tex!

I was not taking a 1:1 ratio. My doc had told me to take 600mg of Magnesium, but hadn’t said anything about calcium.
I’ll up my calcium to 600 & see if the joint aches ease.

Do you take K2 with your D3? I was taking K2 until I realized it had soy in the brand I was taking.

No, I can't take K2 because it can interfere with blood thinners. I take Plavix to reduce stroke risk.

up calcium to 600mg or magnesium??

upping the calcium will deplete more magnesium.

yes ratio is 1:1
the interpretation is that for for every mg of calcium you take you need 'ADDITIONAL' mg of magnesium ABOVE the daily requirement for Magnesium

ie RDA for magnesium is 350-400mg elemental magnesium per day.
if you take calcium, you need to increase your elemental magnesium intake 1:1 ratio above the RDA for magnesium to ensure you dont deplete magnesium

leg cramps are main symptom of magnesium deficiency. increasing calcium wont remove leg cramps it will make them worse.

the other aspect to this is why take calcium?? (or take so much calcium) calcium does not build bones, Vit D3 and magnesium does.

I agree...why take it...I guess I read a long time ago you needed both together to help the magnesium work correctly.

I think I’ll drastically reduce it, or stop the calcium.

So am I correct the general consensus here is that it is not necessary to take calcium as a supplement? Sometimes I wonder if we get enough calcium due to our lactose free diets (and when I listen to the cracking sound of my joints)..

Correct I do not feel we need to supplement with calcium.

There is new discoveries about electromagnetic fields interrupting our cells and creating calcium channel blockers so we need the magnesium to open them up so the calcium doesn’t get built up in our body. I will share a link I just read on this.

Henry, I'm getting all of my calcium from almond milk. 2-1/2 cups per day.
