Sugar cravings

Post by Janie »

I tried looking in the archives a few weeks ago, but couldn't find out what nutrient, vitamin or mineral I am missing. Intense sugar cravings not carbs per say. Can anyone direct me to the topic or tell me what to do, Besides gnaw on my arm.

Well, it could be a deficiency of chromium, vanadium, magnesium, or zinc. The first two are trace minerals that can cause sugar craving. Deficiencies of chromium or vanadium sometimes occur when someone is on a restrictive diet. But chromium shouldn't be a problem for MCers because lean meats are a good source. Vanadium is in things like shellfish and whole grains.

A magnesium or zinc deficiency can cause sugar craving by increasing insulin resistance. A magnesium deficiency is known to cause chocolate craving, in particular, because chocolate is a good source of magnesium. There might be other causes that I'm not aware of.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

How much sugar and high carb processed food are you eating? Sugar, high carb processed foods (think grains and flour) and even fruit can create strong cravings for more sugar and high carb foods. It has to do with the insulin being released by the pancreas to deal with the glucose load. By entirely eliminating sugar, grains and fruit from my diet I have eliminated the craving for sugar. Different people are more or less sensitive to its addictive effect.

Thanks Tex and Jean, it is mainly a piece of chocolate. I don't stray from meat and veggies except the occasional corn chex or Udis bagel. Also banana. I think it's the afternoon slump. :cat:

Craving chocolate is a well-known symptom of magnesium deficiency.

After you wrote about the Mag. and chocolate, I added some more lotion at night. I will keep working at it.
Thanks again
