TEX - YOUR OPINION

Post by barbieAnn »

Hello Tex,

I had spoke with my doc yesterday and explained about how the Uceris worked for 3 days and then I started having more bowel movements than I normally do so I had to stop. He said that I should not have stopped even though my symptoms worsened and should stay on it for at least 2 weeks. Would you please give me your opinion on this?

Remember, I'm not a doctor, so this is just my unprofessional opinion, but in my opinion he doesn't understand MC and he doesn't understand how budesonide works. At 3 days, it should be helping, not making your symptoms worse. Occasionally budesonide may take up to 2 weeks or more to become effective, but especially if you have been avoiding gluten, I don't see any reason why your symptoms should be worse in 3 days unless you are allergic or otherwise sensitive to one or more of the ingredients in the budesonide.

I don't recall ever seeing any member here post where they had worse symptoms after 3 days of budesonide treatment, but they kept taking it anyway, and it later somehow became effective. Of course that may be because virtually everyone stops taking a medication if it makes their symptoms worse.

For three days I felt great on Uceris, but then after the 3rd day, I had the fecal incontinence start (which I hadn't had for quite awhile and multiple trips to the bathroom at work which I wasn't having - with incontinence.) The same thing happened when I went on the Budesonide - 3 - 9mg tablets in the morning - felt great for a few days and then went downhill. I had asked him if I should maybe take 3mg of the budenoside to see if that dosage would work for me and he said "No, with microscopic colitis, the 9mg is the dosage that should work." He didn't even want me to try less of a dosage. He now wants to do a malabsorption fecal test. And as for the nausea and the weight loss, he doesn't have a clue.

The incontinence is a sign that you are very sensitive or allergic to something in it. If the dose were too strong, you would have had constipation symptoms, not diarrhea. Diarrhea is a symptom of intolerance or allergy. Constipation would be a symptom of excessive dosing of budesonide.

Virtually all of us have malabsorption issues, so that information won't be much help.

Regarding the nausea, it's a symptom of chronic magnesium deficiency (but it can also be a symptom of magnesium overdose). The nausea (morning sickness) that usually becomes a problem during pregnancy, can easily by minimized or eliminated by supplementing with magnesium, for example If you're already taking a magnesium supplement, switch to topical applications to see if that helps. Sometimes an antihistamine will help to reduce the nausea.
