Stopping a flare-- nothing working

Post by StaceyB »

Hi, this is one of those "middle of the night what should I do" posts. My husband has LC that is triggered by corn and all its derivatives. He got into a flare over this holiday season that we have not been able to get a handle on, despite being meticulous with his diet. He just woke up to the middle of a severe attack when all he ate yesterday was homemade bone broth (additive-free salt, short ribs, an onion), with ground grass-fed beef, and basmati rice, and some eggs. This flare is killing him-- he also has secondary progressive MS and uses a wheelchair. Because of the corn allergy, he can't take any meds (corn is literally in everything). Is there anything I am missing, anything I can do? Thank you.

Hello, Stacey. The onion in the bone broth could be an issue as well as the eggs. Many of us can't tolerate eggs, some can have duck eggs. Most of us can tolerate turkey. Can you add some turkey to his diet? I hope you are able to figure it out soon.

I agree with Marcia. Even if he is not sensitive to eggs, onion can trip up many/most of us. Getting back out of a flare can be tough.

Can he tolerate budesonide? If it's effective for him, I would suggest he start with a full dose of 3 capsules and then drop down to 2 capsules as soon as he regains control, which should within a few days. Then he can reduce the dose to 1 capsule at the first signs of constipation, and continue tapering the dose from there.

The diet alone will bring remission, but it will take longer for the antibody levels to decline to normal levels without the corticosteroid. He will probably continue to react until his antibody levels decline, and they decline somewhat slowly with the diet. Budesonide can speed up that process significantly.

Hi, unfortunately, he can't tolerate budesonide or most meds due to the corn derivatives used in the tablets or capsules, and fillers. We might try to get it compounded. What a web of confusion corn allergy is! I tried making him bone broth without any onion and poured it over some homemade (from safe basmati) rice farina. Seeing how that goes.

I had to avoid corn while I was recovering, so I recognize what you're up against. Corn is in almost everything. That broth and rice should work.

further to the suggestions above, I would avoid the eggs for now, unless you can confirm with the farm what the chickens are eating. Corn is a common feed for chickens.

stick with bland bone broth (ie no onions etc) bones and salt only. with the grass fed beef and rice. be patient for 3-4 days.
also increase Vit D3 and magnesium (topical would be best) to help the body clear inflammation/toxins etc

all the best

Stacey,

Have you checked the formula of Uceris? It works similar to budesonide. Also have you checked the formula of cholestyramine?

Regards,
