Christmas staying as a guest=disaster

Post by Greengoddess »

I’m not sure if anyone else has had this experience but it involved many occasions where GF food was cooked for me but in such a way as to make me feel I should be inappropriately grateful and drew attention to me in a way that was a master class in passive aggression. Then of course the food was inevitably contaminated and resulted in a major flare! Psoriasis included. Gosh! I sound so mean. Perhaps it’s just the stress of the whole thing. Glad to be back with my own cooking!

Sorry about the problem. Some people think they deserve extra credit for doing what they should be glad to do for a friend. And usually someone like that isn't as smart as they think they are, so they run a high risk of cross-contamination. It all makes me almost become a hermit.

Sorry to hear you had less than ideal experience / meal times with hosts.

I just travelled for past 7 days. for the night we were with others, I was lucky we had pre-warned the chef host that it was best not to try and embrace cooking for the gabe safe eating plan! and I stayed with my staples that I had brought with me.

had a great week food wise / digestion wise. only major incident was when my foot had an altercation with a sting ray.

Yes, another reason I was not online much until I got home from the trip.

we had to spend time at doctors /hospital getting my foot checked for sting ray barb etc, which is a time consuming activity when it is the week between xmas and new year and everything operates on minimal staffing.
(and a doctor that had never seen a sting ray injury before)

Hi GreenGoddess - sounds like an awful experience. I have a sister-in- law who I love dearly. She and my brother always host Christmas dinner because she has severe Crohns and can’t travel. She loves to cook- homemade noodles and all kinds of pies, and of course she offers those foods to me. I have explained to her at least 3 times that I can’t eat wheat- but she simply can’t get it. I’ve always just taken my own food- it’s easier when it’s just a day or two, but it’s the best way to protect ourselves which really is the priority. (And I no longer care what others think. Those that love you will be okay with it).

On the other hand I had company last weekend and everything I served was gluten and soy free. They of course had no idea. For example, I served them beef stew with gf cornbread (with soy-free butter and honey). Breakfast was bacon, eggs and roasted red potatoes. Again, they ate and didn’t notice or care.
It’s really not that hard to fix gf meals when hosting. I’m sorry you were made to feel like a spectacle.

Take care- Carol

I'm sorry you had that awful experience. I take my own food everywhere and ask my friends and family not to make anything for me. It's easier that way and there won't be hard feelings when I don't eat something that was prepared "especially" for me. On Christmas Eve at my Mom's house I was sitting there eating my food minding my own business when my Mom said for all to hear "Aw, look at Marcia. She has to bring her own food." {thunk} Thanks, Mom. She didn't mean anything by it but I didn't appreciate her calling everyone's attention to my dinner and I too felt like a spectacle. I'll give her a pass because she's 82. Happy New Year, everyone!

My friends and family after all these years, always call me ahead of visits to check if their menus will be okay for me. That makes me happy and grateful.
