Hi all,
Just been diagnosed after falling ill with watery (D) and pain + Joint pain since Oct 17. Been put on Budesonide for 16 weeks, 7 days in, it's helping but has not stopped altogether. I guess I need to be patient. I only seem to be able to eat chicken So wondering if it would be helpful to see a dietitian? One more question, did anyone develop and very stuffy nose and irritating tickly cough (constant) whilst being on the steroids? Thanks....
Newly diagnosed
Hi,
Welcome to the forum. It's possible that budesonide is causing those symptoms, but I'm guessing that they're due to a histamine reaction caused by eating leftover (refrigerated) chicken. Chicken develops high histamine levels when it is stored above 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-18 degrees Certigrade). The histamine level continues to increase fairly rapidly at refrigeration temperatures. I have minor symptoms if I eat chicken (even chicken soup) that's been stored in the refrigerator for 24 hours. At 48 hours the symptoms are very noticeable, and if I eat chicken stored in the refrigerator for 72 hours, I will be bloated and I'll itch like mad. And some members here react to chicken similarily to gluten.
The solution (if you are not otherwise sensitive to chicken) is to immediately freeze leftovers and then thaw them in a microwave just before eating, or switch to turkey or lamb. Virtually no one reacts to turkey or lamb. Almost all dieticians do not know enough about MC to be able to help with choosing a safe diet. They will recommend a diet that they feel should work for Crohn's or UC, but unfortunately it won't work for MC.
I hope that some of this is helpful.
Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
