LC and new medications for a bad cold

Post by JohnnyG »

I have been on the stage 1 diet and taking Budesonide (9mg per day). Bad D, also taking up to 8 Imodium per day. Have had a bad cold and worried about it getting into my chest. Went to my family doctor and explained that I can't take anything that would have side effects with my current prescription and nothing that is hard on my stomach. He prescribed Azithromycin dose pack and Methylprednisolone 4 mg dose park. I'm afraid to take but feel maybe I need it.
Your thoughts would be appreciated!

best advice for colds and flu

- Rest
- Increase water intake
- High dose Vit D3
- Support immune system with Vit C and Zinc
- use things like netti pot to clear clear mucus

There is some published studies/articles that talk about the success of high dose Vit D3 that can prevent respiratory infection
I have used this technique myself and it works

Thanks Gabes,
I have been doing vit D 5000 for about 10 days and will continue.
I have always been a very heavy drinker with the water.
The hard one is that thing call rest! Work and the job always seem to get in the way of that. This is probably the biggest thing that needs to change in my life.

Again, thanks for the help!

5000 iu of VIt D3 is a maintenance dose

if you read the articles and discussions in the previous posts i provided you will see that we are talking doses of 1000-2000iu per KG of body weight for 3 days to clear flu.

if you push the body too hard - ie keep working while sick, then no amount of antiobiotics / suppelments will help body heal.
current day cold and flu medications, mask symptoms so people can continue working sadly for MC'ers most of these types of medications cause MC issues.

John,

In addition to what Gabes posted, I would point out (you probably already know this) that the antibiotic will not shorten your cold (since it will not affect viruses) but it might help to prevent a bacterial infection if that is what you're concerned about. The azithromycin (Z-Pak) is one of the few antibiotics that most of us can take without triggering an MC reaction. It's possible that it might trigger a flare, but most of us can usually take it without it causing a flare.

I'm not sure what his thoughts were on the methylprednisolone. I'm guessing that he figured that the pred would help to hold down the inflammation in the event the Z-Pak caused a reaction. 4 mg is a small dose, but since you are already taking budesonide, it would be enough to kind of supercharge the budesonide.

Vitamin D (and magnesium to convert vitamin D into the active form) will help your immune system to do its job. I usually keep some 50,000 IU vitamin D capsules on hand in case the bird flu or some other dangerous strain should come along.

Yes to Vick’s and also the wonderful Neil’s Sinus wash which is also a way of preventing a sinus infection. Antibiotics won’t work with a virus and many bacteria are becoming resistant to them.

Welcome Johnny,

If you are having heavy D on 9 mg of budesonide don't be quick to step down to lower dose. Stay on 9 mg until you get solid stool and then step down to 6 mg. It might take longer than the 30 days typically recommended by the American Docs. We recommend a long slow taper for budesonide users on the board.

Terry,
When I was a child my mom would rub Vicks on my chest and then wrap a cloth diaper around my neck. That was the remedy back in the 60's. When I smell Vicks now it takes me back there.
