Weird Story

Post by JJ »

This story is just too weird...I don't know if I told you guys, but I mailed-off one letter/vitae yesterday...to a CC that is maybe 20 miles away....not even in Tacoma. They had posted a part-time teaching position in last weeks paper...my niece said she would beat me up if I didn't apply....So I mailed it yesterday afternoon.

I was sitting here at work this morning and the phone rang...some woman was calling to see if my school had a metals/jewelry program because her Metals Guild is sponsoring a High School art exhibit. We started chatting and I told her I was looking for part-time teaching and she said that she was the retired head of the Art Dept. of the CC I wrote to yesterday....she told me who to contact (and that is the fellow I wrote to). She said that if I don't hear back from him, I should call him and use her name!!!!!!! If the job is filled this spring, she said they may still need to hire people for next Fall!!!!! She has my e-mail addresses and I have her phone no. .....I can't believe my good fortune! She said as people retired, they didn't hire back full time profs, but were more inclined to hire part-time people! That would be me...anyway...had to share this with you...it was so bizarre that I have sent only one letter out and it was to that particular institution.....TTFN....JJ

Thanks Shirley...I have my meeting with the Assist Head of my school in 20 mins.....I am prepared for the worst.....I'm sure they won't have any work for me in the other divisions. I will report later tonight.....sigh...I have been rehearsing what I am going to say and have a list of questions to ask him. Luckily, I can leave his office and go right home.....I'm sure I will have a few tears...

My opening line is..." I guess I've found myself in a bit of an employment pickle"...and let him talk from there. Wish me luck....JJ

I am really hitting a low point again....had the meeting...they have no intentions of giving me back a portion of the Middle School, even though I have seniority. The Assist Head of school was nice enough, but had no answers for me..... he did mention that they are looking for a new Year Book advisor...the other gal is quitting. It is a burn-out job and would only equal one class. I don't know how much I am being cut, so this is not sounding like a good deal....too much stress and much weekend work. I have heard nothing but complaints from the past year book advisors...I would also have to spend time being trained this summer(and not get paid for it!) I am furious...I went over to my neighbors house and cried and cried...I even came home and smoked a cigarette...I am not proud of that since I had been without since September 1st. More soon...thanks for letting me rant! Thanks...JJ

What an up and down day you had! Sorry it didn't go better at your meeting. Pretty neat about the retired CC person calling though--like accidental networking. Do you have metal/jewelry classes at your school?

Also, congratulations on not smoking for 6 months.

But then the big *WELL* and all cus she is OVER-QUALIFIED and the $$$ they offer her is waaaaaaaaaaay below her means!

Even the temp agency cant find what she needs----

Its been very stressful for her also---good thing she has been a saver--

Imagine working yourself up to being great @ your job and cus of that one becomes OVER-QUALIFIED

Hope there is something around the corner for u soon

Hi...thanks you guys...I am so upset about the year book job...it would mean more contract for me $....but would keep me from exploring other options. Right?

I am also thinking of not retiring from the Vashon Ski School....I had announced my retirement because I wanted to start a ski program for my school. Ya right...who knows about that now! Our spring seesion has been moved to Sundays, so I could offer a Saturday Spring Program for my school if I even feel like doing anything special for them! Sorry, I am sounding so bitter!

Kathy, we don't have a jewelry program at my school....in fact with my cut back, who knows what I will offer! In any year I usually teach drawing, painting, pottery, intro to art, adv art, portfolio class, and art history. I made a casserole for dinner...good ol comfort food.....TTFN...JJ

Jill, if you are so upset about the year book job, that seems like a pretty clear sign. I'm sorry this is all happening to you. I wish you could just be transported to six months or a year down the road and skip all the pain.

It's good to get the anger out, but don't let it eat YOU up! Celia

Thanks you guys....I luckily have Interim week next week...don't know if I mentioned it before. The Upper School takes next week as a week to learn/experience new things. Our juniors are on a charter bus headed to Oregon/Calif to look at colleges, the sophomore class is doing an outdoor Ed camping trip including rock climbing, etc...you can imagine they are not happy about that! The Frosh and Seniors get to choose from different 4-day programs...I'm offering Skiing and Snowboarding for Dummies, There is Aviation for Young Women, Scuba Diving, Snow shoeing/ice skating, Glass Blowing and Film Discussion. It's a pretty neat program. I have done my program for several years and in the old days we got to stay at a hotel at the Summit. Now we will commute each day...the kids are in a special snow boarding program....3 days of lessons, rentals, lifts for only $99. It is mid-week, so no crowds and I got to request the instructor that was so good with my kids two years ago. It will also get me out of the building! The Head of the Science dept is driving for me...I have know him for 21 years and he is very sympathetic to my situation at work...he is very kind. He will be our "anchor' in the lodge and I can go ski if I want...hope it isn't raining up there....who knows...but it will be good to get some fresh air and be away form it all for a few days! I still have to come home each night and do grade reports...our trimester ended yesteday.

Today, I am going to work on sending out job letters, and tonight I'm going to seen to any of the Oscar Nominated films....I refuse to pay full move prices ...too much $$$$$. I may also try to go for a walk down on the waterfont...the exercise will hopefully help my depression. Thanks for listening to me ramble. TTFN...JJ

Jill,

I'm really sorry to hear of all the turmoil job-wise for you. How's your health? (Other than the ciggie indiscretion which can easily be forgiven). I hope you hear from this other fellow real soon and that there might be some new avenues just over the horizon.

Love
Your Friend Peg

Hope something comes up for you soon. Maybe that co-incidence is a sign that your job situation will improve soon. Lets hope so anyway.

Love

Liz
