Salt cravings? Cholestyramine question.

Post by persevere »

Could my salt cravings be tied to this condition???
Also, just started cholestyramine. A full dose repeated on me, so I have cut dose. When is it really optimal to take? I take meds at 9 am and 9 pm.
Thanks

HI,
I didn't notice any salt issues when I was taking cholestyramine for 8 months...but then I salt to taste most my food anyway so I feel I must be giving my body what it craves ahead of time, lol.

You have options when it comes to taking cholestyramine....you can take it at 5 a.m. before your 9 a.m. OR take your meds and then take the cholest at 11:00 a.m. I would definitely take the cholest at 5 p.m. before my 9 pm medicine though.

Rule of thumb is 4 hours before medicine or 2 hours after medicine. Does that make sense?

I'm not sure if your post is about craving salt or salt related to medication. I was diagnosed with LC last May. I rarely would salt my food prior to LC (other than fries or corn) but now I use salt a lot! I buy Pink Himalayan salt and even bought a shaker to have to have at my desk at work for the days I eat at my desk. I have wondered about this -

- is it related to the fact that because I no longer eat processed food, the food I am eating during the day only has the salt that I am adding
- is it because my choices for seasoning are limited
- is it related to LC

I haven't noticed any problems related to my increased use of salt so I don't worry about it too much -

Yes, it is that awareness of frequently reaching for salt and salty taste . Curious.

This is an interesting observation. Thinking back, I ate a lot of Fritos, pork rinds, potato chips, etc., back when I was magnesium deficient. Now that my magnesium deficiency is resolved, I no longer eat any of them. If I try to eat them now, they upset my digestion. I don't know if that's because I no longer have the deficiency or it's merely a coincidence.

That is an interesting observation Tex.....I just realized I have two pkgs of fritos on my fridge and haven't gotten into them in a long while....I don't really crave chips much anymore either. I eat a few here an there with meals sometimes, but as far as seeing them and saying oh I just gotta have some right now....LOL...that doesn't happen anymore.
