I need your help to see if I'm on the right track. Everything seemed to be managable until the last year when everything went to.....well, you know. I've been having non-stop D since then. It had been a high stress time and I attributed alot of it to that. We moved from NY to FL, (snowbirds) and my GI in NY added entecort to my mesalamine. No help. I am now in FL and things are much worse. I got a new GI here who ordered another colonoscopy (of course) which showed mast cells so put me on Uceris (made migraines worse so stopped it) and then gave me Zantac and Zyrtec and told me go ahead and eat gluten and dairy (I've been gluten and dairy free for years). I decided to take matters into my own hands and have ordered my Enterolab tests (now that I can), started the elimination diet, stopped all my meds except chelated magnesium which I just started and has really helped my migraines, my new D3 which has no soy and my new multivitamins with no G,S,D and the Celexa which I am weaning myself off over the next 3 months. I am also doing Reiki which I find helpful and yoga as I can. I am exhausted and having significant leg cramps from my hips on down on and off all day. AND I'm still have the squirts. Not alot of D, but enough that I'm pretty homebound in the morning. Am I headed in the right direction and just have to tough it out or just beating my head against the wall for nothing? I don't know where else to go for advice. Clearly the medical community is worthless at this point. Thanks for all you do. You are life savers.

Hi Adele,

Yes, you are definitely on the right track and your program should do the trick given enough healing time. The fact that your symptoms became worse when you moved to Florida was probably a reflection of the stress of the move and the longer pollen season in Florida. Your GI doc had the right idea pursuing mast cells up until he jumped the track and crashed, when he apparently claimed that diet has nothing to do with MC. The antihistamines and relaxation exercises should help the most.

If the magnesium is not quite enough to overcome the leg cramps, you might get some benefit from this product. I take one at bedtime each night.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Thanks Tex. So you think I should continue with the Zantax and the Zyrtec anyway?

That depends on whether you have significant pollen allergies without them. Pollen allergy symptoms will also affect your MC symptoms, but I wouldn't take them (especially the Zantac) unless I needed it/them. It's possible for H2 antihistamines (such as Zantac) to trigger MC in some cases.
