Nordic Paleo Diet

Post by Rosie »

Interesting article about how the Nordic stone age diet consisted almost entirely of protein, with over half of the protein coming from fish. So this is more support for us not worrying about the traditional "balanced diet" with an emphasis on grains and carbs........

New research at Lund University in Sweden can now show what Stone Age people actually ate in southern Scandinavia 10,000 years ago. The importance of fish in the diet has proven to be greater than expected. So, if you want to follow a Paleo diet -- you should quite simply eat a lot of fish.

"At the Norje Sunnansund settlement, outside Sölvesborg in Sweden, you can see that just over half of the protein intake has come from fish, ten per cent from seals, and around 37 per cent from land mammals, such as wild boar and red deer, and scarcely three per cent from plants such as mushrooms, berries and nuts," says Adam Boethius. "On the island of Gotland, which did not have any land mammals apart from rabbits, the percentage of fish in total protein consumption was even higher at just under 60 per cent. Here, seals have replaced the land mammals and account for almost 40 per cent of the protein intake, whereas rabbits and vegetables account for a negligible proportion," he continues.

Great article. It substantiates my claim that the carb and fiber percentages listed in USDA diet suggestions and virtually all diet lists attributed to paleological people are exaggerated to the point of being downright ludicrous. Those people primarily ate meat. They ate carbs and fiber only when they couldn't find any real food — given a choice, they always ate meat. And I've never understood why fish is not considered to be meat. It sure reminds me of meat. :headscratch:

Anyway, thanks for posting that link.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
