Digoxin
Anyone here take Digoxin? The Cardiologist wants to put me on it for my elevated heart rate. I had an atrial ablation 7 years ago. I am in sinus rhythm with 90's heart rate. I am taking 600 to 700 Mag and of course Vit D. I am already on Cardizem. Any advice from Tex and the group would be appreciated. Thanks Janie

Hi Janie
I don't have any experience or insight on that issue. I used to take 600 mg of magnesium but when I complained about my bradicardia (heart rate in the 60's) and arrythmia to my doctor, he advised me to cut my magnesium rate in half because my kidneys were being overworked by the excess magnesium and my eGFR was down in the upper 30's (should be above 60). The arrythmia is gone but my heart rate is only slightly higher now. He did mention that magnesium not only lowers blood pressure, but it also lowers the heart rate, so if your kidneys are fine, you are probably on the right track.

If you decide to take it, there shouldn't be any risk of triggering MC, because recent research shows that it suppresses colitis in mice.

I hope this is helpful. Sorry I couldn't provide any insight from using it myself.

There is a rare risk of mesenteric ischemia (which is probably almost always fatal). It is used to control ventricular rate in atrial fibrillation and in the management of congestive heart failure with atrial fibrillation. Its use in congestive heart failure and sinus rhythm is less certain. The margin between toxic and therapeutic doses is small. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p666)

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Hi!
I have been on Digoxin for many years. 0.125.. I was diagnosed with PAT, which is a misfiring of my heart muscle that
leads to a very rapid heart rate! It was done wonders to eliminate any episodes.
Hope this helps with your decision.
