Too much Vitamin D3?
Hey guys. I was wondering if it's possible to take too much Vitamin D3 with MC.
Last year in January my vitamin D level was super low, 13. (the year before that it was around 46 I think) My regular doctor even called me and prescribed me the 50,000 IU vitamin D2 to take for 8 weeks and then told me to start taking over the counter 2000 IU D3 supplements once a day after that. I didn't start taking the D3 until November because I figured I would be spending more time in the sun during summer, and I was afraid to have too much vitamin D in my system.
I started taking vitamin D3 in November, 2000 IU a day- and good thing I did because I work in an Emergency Room & I didn't get a cold/flu at ALL whereas last year I got sick 3 times in a row! I had my vitamin D level tested again during my annual physical with my doctor last month and it was 86! On the lab results paper it said the high "normal" is 100. This blood work was drawn 24 hours after taking a dose of D3.
Should I continue taking vitamin D3 once it's more sunny? (I live in Central California, it will be very sunny here soon)
Is it possible to have too much vitamin D3? I see people on here recommending 5000 IU a day for MC. I haven't had any significant improvement in my MC symptoms since taking either the D2 or D3. I've only noticed that my immune system has been pretty rock solid this season as I have been exposed to entire families with positive flu tests coughing and sneezing on me left and right, and the vaccine was only supposed to be like 10% effective this year or something.

Yes, it's possible to take too much vitamin D supplement. Note that it's impossible to get too much vitamin D by natural means. And this is true for virtually all vitamins. We can't get too much vitamin D from sun exposure (but it's certainly possible to get sunburn from too much sun exposure) and we can't get too much vitamin D from eating unprocessed foods. I specified unprocessed foods because today, vitamin D is added to some processed foods by FDA mandate. The added vitamin D is usually in the form of D2, which is poorly absorbed.
In general, the Vitamin D Council recommends keeping our blood level between approximately 40 and 80 ng/dL. Levels above 150 ng/mL are considered excessive and potentially toxic. Some people's immune systems use a lot more vitamin D than others (especially when their MC is active), thus the wide range in supplemental needs from one individual to another.
Skin exposure largely determines how much vitamin D we get from the sun. For example, there's an epidemic of vitamin D deficiency in sunny India, because most people living there have somewhat darker skins (which are more resistant to vitamin D production) and they tend to cover up to block the sun. In California, if you don't block too much sunlight, and you're fair-skinned, you should be able to easily get most of your vitamin D needs from the sun during much of the year. But in general, people get less skin exposure to the sun today than they did a few generations ago. If you want more information, there are many pages of discussion on vitamin D in my latest book.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
I must not understand your question, because I don't see any relevancy of any ratio between vitamin D and magnesium.

I built my own personal ratio...I have a standard 5000 it VitD daily along with a daily magnesium intake (or external if one needs to) of anywhere between 400-600 mg spread out through the day depending on if I am noticing my body may be having virtual hormonal monthly cycles, and obviously this is a once a week occurrence (then I have to increase it to ward off any migraines that might decide to develop).
Other than that....if you want more specifics it appears I range between 2.5 and 4 mg of magnesium per pound of body weight depending on need.
I also don't feel I have any vivid dreams based on the VitD I have been taking for the last 3 years and am not aware of any bad dreams based on the P5P I have been taking either. I took 10,000 VitD3 for 7 months along with around 700-800mg magnesium and did not notice any odd dream occurrences either.

Yes, the body may need additional magnesium when one takes larger doses of vitamin D because magnesium is necessary as a cofactor when converting vitamin D into the active form so that the immune system can use it. I'm not aware of any published details on the required amounts, it just needs to be adequate to fulfill the needs of the body.
