Traveler's Constipation

Post by skp »

For many years prior to my LC diagnosis, I have had traveler's constipation. That has not changed for me. Last summer I took two trips and learned the hard way not to increase fiber on those trips unless I wanted to come home and have horrible cramping and pain before exploding.

For the past few months at home I have had Normals every morning fairly soon after I get up.

My husband and I, on Thursday,April 5th, flew from NC to CA to see family and friends. I had a normal the morning I left and then the my colon locked up once again. Knowing this might happen, on Thursday evening at dinner I took a mag oxide in addition to the four mag glycinate I had taken during the day. At home, this would have done the trick. No bowel movement on Friday. I then took a Senekot in addition to the glycinate and oxide hoping for action on Saturday. No action. So, I then took Colace in addtion to the magnesium glycinate and oxide. Small action no Sunday and then a fairly Normal on Monday.

The rest of the week I had a Normal every morning and then we flew home on Friday, the 13th. After returning home, I have had Normals and very soft stools and D about three times. It's been six days and my body is still trying to adjust.

Yesterday I had a check-in visit with my GI doc, a good guy who has a record of my Enterolab results and is easy to talk with. He gave me packets of Miralax, telling me it is one of the ingredients in the stuff we drink before a colonoscopy. He suggested I take it a day before my next trip and to take it every day if needed. He suggested starting out with half a packet of the powder and work up from there.

Miralax is polyethylene glycol 3350.

I have two week long trips planned in May and June.

Has anyone tried Miralax for constipation?
