Coconut Oil Alternatives?
Hey everyone, happy Friday!
I've been eliminating many refined oils in my diet lately such as canola, vegetable, soy, peanut, sunflower, etc. and I wanted to know what some good alternatives would be, at least on the healthier spectrum? I try to stay away from them when I can but certain foods are easier to cook in my house if I use a little bit of oil.
Coconut oil works for me, but it tastes very desserty to me, and it's also crazy high in fat, so I want to find another alternative. I was thinking about grapeseed oil but I need to do more research on that. So I thought I'd open the floor to any suggestions. Thank you in advance!

Hi Stephen,
I use the Carrington brand coconut oil exclusively and don't notice a "desserty" flavor at all - I don't worry about the fat content as we need the amino acids from protein and the good fats as well to heal our intestines. Grapeseed oil is good also, as would avocado oil too.... (don't cook with olive oil and only purchase California brand due to cross blending from soy).
I'm sure others have had good luck with other types of fat oils.
Good luck in your choices!

Thank you both. I just picked up a Carrington brand coconut oil a bit ago, because I saw this while standing in the oil aisle and thought I might just get some! Haha!
I worried about the fat content mainly because I want to try to stay away from a high-fat diet. My grandfather passed away a few years back from pancreatic cancer, and I read that a low-fat diet is a good way to prevent that. I'm still learning a lot about this disease and how I can get all of my nutrients, but I'm glad I have some extra input.

Stephen,
IMO fat is not a primary cause of pancreatic cancer, though it may be associated in some cases. A number of unrelated but surprising dietary factors are implicated. If you are interested in preventing pancreatic cancer, I suggest you get a copy of my book on pancreatic cancer, and read it carefully. You can download it free in digital form at Smashwords, Barns & Noble, itunes/Apple, and probably a bunch of other places. It's also available on Amazon, but Amazon doesn't allow free books (except during short promotions) so they charge $O.99 for it, or you can buy a printed version at cost (Amazon makes a profit but I receive nothing). I believe the printed cost is $3.85, unless they've decided to discount it.

Oh man, that's super helpful. You've had an answer for all of my questions thus far. I love it! LOL.
But really thank you, Tex. I'm going to take a look at your books and do some more research. I got my lab results back today, and everything looks good except for my Vitamin D levels. I am around 15 while I should be between 20 to 50. I saw you have a book on that too. Do you have any recommendations on any supplement brands for VitD I should try?
Thanks again!

Just make sure that it's free of your sensitivities. I use Doctor's Best brand, 5,000 IU softgels. You might need to take 2 each day for a month or so in order to build up your blood level of vitamin D and then check your level again to see if you need to adjust the dose.
You're very welcome.

Diane Sanfilippo has a nice guide to cooking fats on her site too. She explains the different types of fats/oils and why they might or might not be great to use.
