OVERWHELMED!!!!

Post by Rebecca Krebs »

I'm a recently diagnosed 70 year old female. I've been reading "Microscopic Colitis" and every other topic on this site that I think might pertain to me. I'm not sure how to start myself n the road to healing. I have taken Nexium for 2-3 years, so I do know that I have to wean myself off the drug and begin taking VitD3 and magnesium first. What about diet? Wait until I'm off Nexium to make changes? I have never had food sensitivity problems. What about lab tests? My main systems are diarrhea 2-5 times a day, 12 pound weight loss in 3 months, and fatigue. I am trying to stay hydrated. I have made an appointment with GI clinic at Vanderbilt, but cannot be seen until end of July. I do know that I have to be my best advocate. What do I need to do in the meantime? Thanks so much in advance for any advice!!!!

Hi Rebecca,

There's a possibility that your reactions might be due strictly to the Nexium and you do not yet have any food sensitivities. If that's the case, I would wean off the Nexium first. If that doesn't stop the diarrhea then you will have to make the diet changes. FWIW, before we developed MC, most of the rest of us didn't have any food sensitivities either, but we have them now.

From a health standpoint though, gluten is not good for anyone. So if you choose to avoid gluten now, you might be able to preempt future health problems (additional autoimmune diseases) and then if you do turnout to have other food sensitives, you will be able to stop the diarrhea much sooner when you start avoiding the other food sensitivities later. That's because it takes a long time to heal intestinal damage caused by gluten. If/when you want to start the diet anyway, you can find guidelines here.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
