Splenda(sucralose) and IBD
Interesting article (summarized in first link, complete in second link):

They show data that supports the idea that sucralose affects gut microbes and leads to inflammation in people susceptible (ie - Crohn's patients).
This is especially interesting to me since it fits exactly with my developing serious GI problems.
1990 - I had Mono (epstein barr virus)
1990-2000 developed worsening "IBS" along with intermittently raised liver enzymes (ALT/AST) and low neutrophils/WBCs.
2001 - I bought a couple 2 liter bottles of Diet Rite (Now with Splenda!) and didn't immediately make the connection that they were giving me "D". Within a week or two I developed serious abdominal pain, GI troubles and started rapidly losing weight. I've been sick ever since though I can remain in some sort of remission for years if I stay low carb and take big doses of Saccharomyces boulardii every day. I still have minor problems regularly and eating gluten, dairy, soy, etc will send me to the bathroom for a day or two and make me tired and foggy, but won't give me a bad flare up (fever, vomiting, severe D, etc). If I quit S. Boulardii, I will be sick within a week or so.
Not sure the exact nature of my problems, but this makes some sense.

Thanks for posting this information. That's bad news because many here believed that sucralose is the only artificial sweetener that's safe for MC patients. Apparently that's out the window.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
It's possible that it's still ok for some (?). Someone with drug-induced microscopic colitis may have a different susceptibility than a Crohn's patient with a defect in their innate immunity (ie - defect in NOD2/CARD15). Personally, I would avoid it. I find that I'm ok with Zevia diet sodas (with stevia), though I wouldn't overdo it.

Can I clarify what y'all have been saying? You stated Splenda is okay to take. I've been using honey to sweeten my coffee. I love my coffee in the morning and it does not cause diarrhea. It does act like a laxative though. Without coffee, life is NOT WORTH LIVING! I'm also on a Special Carbohydrate Diet per Dr. Fine. Not much to eat. Thanks, Dorothy
Hi Dorothy,
Apparently some MC patients can tolerate Splenda (at least so far), but that doesn't mean that it's safe for everyone. According to the information posted by SN8888, it can cause problems (related to gut bacteria) for (some) Crohn's patients. MC has many characteristics in common with Crohn's disease, so this suggests the possibility of the development of gut bacteria-based problems for some MC patients if they use Splenda, but certainly not a guarantee of symptoms for all who use it. Also, keep in mind that Chron's disease causes somewhat different shifts in gut bacteria, compared with MC. Interestingly, in diseases such as Parkinson's, altered gut bacteria types tend to correlate with different lab symptoms and also with different clinical symptoms.
Sugar is a problem for me also. I find that whether or not it causes diarrhea (at least in my case) is dose-dependent. And the amount of diarrhea seems to be dose-dependent. So as long as I don't overdo sugar, I'm OK. I use sugar cubes in my coffee.

Why is my stool clay colored?
Many times I have noticed my stool is clay colored or light. Plus my stool feels semi-soft to soft. This has me worried because a friend of mine, an Emergency Room physician in Columbia, SC, developed cancer of the bile duct. He passed away a few days ago. Clay colored stools or white stools is a sign of Cancer of the Bile Duct. I'm on the Special Carbohydrate Diet per Dr. Fine. I get plenty of meat since selection is few. I'm also bloated but not as bad before the special diet. CREON helps. Pepto Bismol is a NO NO! I quit that nearly a month ago. Should I consult Dr. Fine about my stool color?
If you detect Cancer of the Bile Duct early, prognosis is good, if you don't, it's a death sentence. It's a rare disease. Does this mean another visit down to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL? I am Sick of doctors. I am Sick of being Sick! Why does God keep punishing me? I am JOB! Life sometimes is not worth living and diabetic lows makes it hard for me to drive. Had another one today. I HAVE NO LIFE! Sometimes DEATH would be a better solution.

Something might be interfering with bile flow. But without bile, you should have steatorrhea (diarrhea with undigested fat floating in the toilet). If you're having well formed stools, that should rule out steatorrhea.
Some anti-diarrheal medications can cause clay-colored stools.

I talked with Dr. Fine's Assistant and she informed me, per Dr. Fine that it's my SPECIAL CARBOHYDRATE DIET that causes light-colored stools. When you learn your close friend has passed away from Cancer of the Bile Duct, you freak and think you have many of the signs and symptoms of his disease. I feel mentally relieved and I think this diet is working...but it's work to abide by the strict diet. Dr. Fine, his assistant and the lab are Wonderful. I would have never know about this lab if it wasn't for Wayne Persky. Thanks Wayne.
You're very welcome, and I'm glad the diet is working. Yes, I forgot to mention that diet definitely affects stool color.
Recovery is a tough journey for most of us, but it beats the heck out of living in the bathroom.
And you're right about cancer. When a friend abruptly passed away from pancreatic cancer, I researched it so much that I finally wrote a book about the ways that I found to minimize the chances of ever developing it.
