Protein Powders and Colitis

Post by KatelynOR14 »

Hello!
I’m a 21 (or will be this Sunday May 28th), female. I was diagnosed with MC in 2016. I’ve recently had a flare up and it’s always hard to get the proper nutrients. I definitely don’t get enough protein. I’m going to be trying Vega One Vanilla and Greens protein powder. Has anyone found that once they increased protein that it helped with symptoms/prevented symptoms? I’ve been really stuck and scared lately. I feel like I don’t have as much control, just overall awful. I’m looking for more nutrition related healing as my nutrition right now is not the best. (Since I have a lot of intolerances.) any advice would be great!! It’s rare seeing other 20-something year olds with MC, so if there are any of you out there, I’d love to chat! Thank you! Sending everyone love and positivity. :) <3

Hi Katelyn,

Protein is not only helpful for controlling symptoms, it's absolutely essential for healing the intestines. Our bodies require much more protein than normal if we have an IBD (including MC).

Most commercially processed products such as protein supplements contain one or more (most contain many) ingredients that cause us to react. Therefore we are unable to reach remission in most cases if we are using commercially-processed protein supplements. After we reach remission, many of us are able to tolerate a few commercial products that contain only safe ingredients.

Commercially-processed foods typically contain ingredients that we cannot tolerate, and many of them contain cross-contaminated ingredients. Eating them tends to be very risky for us. Eat only whole foods while you are still recovering — you are not only more likely to be able to recover, but you will recover faster. Your body will thank you.

Welcome to the forum, and please feel free to ask anything.

Welcome Katelyn,

:iagree:

Whole protein food ie: Turkey, Beef, Lamb, Wild Game etc

All those protein drinks had way to many ingredients for me, and they still do so I tend to stay away from them and I'm feeling pretty decent these days and it has been 3 years of healing now.

I'd give healing more time with Real Whole Food.
