salted and roasted peanuts in shell
This is my second time eating salted and roasted peanuts in the shell. The ingredients are roasted, in-shell peanuts, and salt. Simple ingredients. I had forgotten that peanuts in the shell made me Sick! I ate a few nuts that I shelled and within one hour I was sick and had to rush to the bathroom. I think the SHELL is the problem. Has anyone experienced this problem? It seems to be peanuts in the shell. I was careful this time to not eat the shell and only the peanuts. Something is going on here I don't understand. It seems the Shells can make you sick.
Hi
From my experience.....any nut that is not in the form of butter consistency does not and will not digest well if at all for me. I can tolerate almond nut butter.
Also Peanuts are part of the Soy family and I react to soy so I have to stay away from peanuts regardless of the form it is in.
If you decide to get the Enterolab testing that will tell you without a doubt if Soy (aka peanuts) may be a problem for you along with a host of other proteins that may be a potential reactor for you as well. It is money very well spent as it has helped me eliminate food that I questioned whether I should stay away from or not.
Cheers
Erica

Peanuts in shell and getting sick
Hi Erica, I did not know that nuts were in the soybean family. I seem to do okay with nuts. But then I don't know. I have bloating and my clothes get tight. Is almond nut butter low in sugar? I love peanut butter, but that could be causing my bloat. The shell peanuts make me rush to the bathroom. I was wondering if they spray the shells. Everyone is different with MC. I also can't seem to lose weight and I am not eating much food on this Special Carbohydrate Diet. Does Bloat cause weight gain? I have so many questions and Dr. Fine is calling me in the morning! He wants to flush out my system and give me blueberry husk. I also want his enzymes. This disease is getting complicated.
One question: people at church served cake for our minister leaving, and two women asked why I didn't eat some cake. I told them I have colitis. Don't want to get too complicated, but their next response is "you're not thin Dorothy and it looks like you haven't lost weight." I am at a loss for words. What do I say? Are y'all like me? They would not know about MC or understand it. If we are losing food from leaky gut syndrome and passing food undigested, why am I not thin. That's the only thing about this disease I like. I want to lose at least 10 lbs, but something is preventing me from losing weight. I can't lose weight. All I eat is ham, chicken, turkey, salmon, fresh fruit, sunflower seeds and nuts. That's it. I think I will forgo the nuts and see.
Wayne Persky has helped me so much along with Dr. Fine, who is nice and helpful! I am going to get the Enterolab testing. I agree, money well spent. I have to know what is going on.... thanks Erica! Warm Regards, Dorothy

Hi Dorothy,
Just peanuts are in the soy family unfortunately. Nuts in general are hard for our inflamed intestines to digest...as far as bloating that’s contributed to a few things....food isn’t getting broken down before it enters the small intestine......too many sugars are trying to digest causing gas...not enough Elemental Magnesium in the body to process digestion properly.
Are you staying away from dairy? It’s a big no no and causes gas too. We already have inflamed intestines so that adds to the pressure too.
Most of us had to take a daily and even nightly antihistamine for a long time in order to help ease the symptoms from too much histamine built up in the gut which causes us problems too.
As far as losing weight yes I lost some, didn’t need to but after healing like I have on a very restrictive diet I am back to my average weight of 142. I feel portion size will be the factor if anyone wants to lose a few pounds. Protein has kept me in line weight wise, plus my 2-3 safe vegetables. I’m sorry people think you have to look different in order for others to think you are ill that’s certainly not the case with MC/LC/CC....we all look rather normal an healthy.
Also you may benefit from S. Boulardii a plant based probiotic I take this in the morning only. It has helped me break food down along with HCL Betaine, I take this one at each of my meals. The HCL helps the stomach to break food down before it enters the small intestine.
One thing for sure you can’t go wrong trying any of these suggestions, at some point one or two may give you that little extra help you need.

Dorothy,
Some people lose a lot of weight with MC — others don't. We are all different. Are you taking budesonide? It causes most people to gain weight.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Dorothy,
I am one of the MC patients that has a hard time losing weight. Even when I have had a significant flair I didn't lose weight. I had weight loss surgery about 18 months ago and have lost about 70 lbs. I was diagnosed with MC 15 years ago and have been overweight for about 20 years. My surgery weight was 307.
There are not many of us in this club but you are not alone.

Peanut butter
I did not know that peanut butter is a soybean product. I get my peanut butter from Whole Foods and it's peanut butter and salt. That's it. It's expensive but I feel safe. Peanut Butter with no sugar is allowed on my Specific Carbohydrate Diet. I have lost weight but can't get my hair to grow back. I had medium thick hair and always got compliments. Now it has thinned out much to my dismay. Dr. Fine has me taking Aloe Vera (Gel form) and it has to stay on my hair all day. I loved my hair when it was thicker! I also take enzymes (CREON). Does anybody else have hair problems? Thanks, Dorothy

I will get tested for allergies to food. Thanks Erica! This disease is complicated and sickens me that GI specialists take it lightly. Uggh to GI Specialists except...Dr. Fine. I also take his probiotics and Blueberry Husk drink for fiber.
Hi Dorothy,
The issue with peanut butter is not that it is derived from soy, but rather that peanuts are a legume, and most people who are sensitive to soy are also sensitive to most legumes.
Hair problems are common with MC (and some of the drugs used to treat MC). After you reach remission, your digestion will improve and trace element deficiencies should fade away, so your hair should start to slowly improve.

Hair thinning
Thanks Tex! I am doing much better on my Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Not an easy diet by any means. I do hope my hair thickens. I know I messed up by putting my hair problems in the peanut section. I won't do that again. Warm Regards, Dorothy

Peanut butter
I ate peanut butter from Whole Foods and felt sick. No diarrhea, just gas and nausea. No more peanut butter folks. Thanks for the info Erica!!!!!!!
Hi Dorothy,
I am very sensitive to soy and found that I also cannot eat peanuts or peanut butter. I ache all over the next day. Sounds crazy, but true.
As far as people asking why you aren’t eating cake, I just tell people I have an allergy to wheat and so I have to avoid anything with wheat flour. It’s an over simplified explanation but people seem to understand what an allergy is. And the truth is, if you eat it you will have inflammation and active colitis as a result. If you don’t look sick then that’s a good thing.
Little did I know that ‘taking care of myself’ and my LC meant having to be more assertive with others about why I’m not eating something they think I should eat. But many of us here had to learn that. After 7 years I still have to have those conversations at family events with people who should know by now that I’m not going to taste their world famous_____ (insert wheat- filled recipe here). Ugh!
Hang in there-
Best wishes
Carol

Peanut Butter
Carol, I am extremely limited in what I can eat. It's a Caveman's Diet for sure! I get nervous when I hear of a crab fest or fish fest in Savannah. I want to go to Clarence Thomas (our Supreme Court Justice) member's home in Pin Point, GA, down the road from our home. They have a fantastic seafood festival. Everybody says the food is magnificent. I can eat crab and seafood but scared of cross contamination. This is where Clarence Thomas grew up fishing and crabbing in his neighborhood back in the 1960's. He's Gullah and that's how they survived. I love seafood and can eat it. Just no corn dodgers and bread. I think I can have dry wine, but no beer. I can take my red dry wine but have to be careful. Outings to eat is a problem.
