Dumping Syndrome?

Post by Sue777 »

I've been doing a lot of reading and research the past few days because of the blood sugar crashes I sometimes have that are ALWAYS accompanied by the urgent, frantic run to the bathroom. From everything I found, the Big D is not a symptom of reactive hypoglycemia, but it led me to find that dumping syndrome and hypoglycemia have pretty much identical symptoms, with the diarrhea only coming with dumping syndrome.

I searched here and there hasn't been much discussion about it and I wonder why....maybe a lot of us have this, either in addition to our colitis or as a result of our colitis? Anyone know anything about dumping syndrome and colitis? Does one lead to the other? Am I more susceptible to having diarrhea with my blood sugar crashes simply because I have IBS and colitis?

Just thought I'd throw it out there - maybe others here are experiencing dumping syndrome and thinking it's their colitis?

Hi Sue,

When you say blood sugar crash....does that mean we have ingested too much or we don't have enough glucose in our blood to perform operations correctly?

I'd be curious one way or the other....I do not have nor have I ever been diagnosed with diabetes or anything sugar related except for high levels of Candida Yeast.

I had one of these episodes last Thursday and attributed it to having a lenient moment at my grandsons 2nd birthday party and had a couple bites of his cake (that was 4 days before this urgent bathroom mode hit) so I figured I was paying for it with some inflammation 4 days later.

Is this syndrome related to hormone levels? Because this mimics how my body can and may still react to my virtual monthly cycle that I can't always tell when it may be because I am not mensing anymore.

Interesting topic to say the least....

I don't have a diagnosed BG level issue, either, but I highly suspect that I have been a reactive hypoglycemic for decades. When I feel my blood sugar is low it's usually because it went from one number to another too quickly (or that's what I've been told). First I get a wave of dizziness, followed by anxiety, then a mad dash to the bathroom, followed by crashing fatigue. Often times I get the shakes, too.

Those are symptoms of hypoglycemia EXCEPT for the diarrhea. And yes, the episodes happen when my body is accustomed to a lot of sugar and carbs and then I suddenly deprive it, or when I've been depriving it and suddenly give it too much. I understand that insulin is usually released based on the amount you needed during the previous meal or previous day.

On an odd note.....fruits in general are giving me this dumping syndrome....it’s got to be to much sugar even in small amounts....

I had maybe 1/4 cup of cut up strawberries with a tiny bit of coconut sugar sprinkled on it an today it’s been nothing but D....not urgent but I suspect fruit is a big no no for me even in small serves.

I have over the years got light headed and figure it was a quick drop in sugar in my body every so often. I’m pretty stable most the time but boy if it catches me off guard I will have to stop what I’m doing get my bearings and find a snack. I have not paired it with bathroom trips yet....will try to notice this next time.

As much as I love fruit, I gave it up a few years ago... the fructose and me don't agree, and it makes me SO HUNGRY (I guess because it peaks and crashes my blood glucose levels).

This makes me so sad.....I love the taste of fruit in season.....

I also can't tolerate tomato in its natural state either.....just had another learning experience reminding me of that these last two days....enjoyed a Mexican restaurant meal and must have indulged in the corn tortilla chip and salsa and then the next night I made gluten free spaghetti with Paul Newman Marinara organic sauce minimal ingredient and hamburger (which beef has its moments with me)....that did not sit well either...hrmph

The heat of Summer is a factor right now too....I can tell the change in my body response to things ever since the temps have gotten into the mid 70's and 80's.....food has to be my basic safe ones in order for me to get back to normans again....
