Anyone used Betaine HCL to aid/reverse reflux

Post by UkuleleLady »

Just because this is the place I always go to when I have a health problem - seriously - you guys are the best -

Has anyone here benefited from using Betaine HCL to alleviate reflux?

I'm going with the much spouted internet theory that I have low stomach acid, which, when appended with HCL will "close" the LES.

I'm sure a gastro would put me on PPIs or some such, but, in MY case, long-term use of PPIs led me to MC.

Not that I will have a gastro this being in the middle of BFE - nowhereville Texas, but to appease my husband I'm seeing my GP tomorrow about heartburn.

I actually think I got glutened and this will pass in a week or two. Past experience has shown me that if I eat gluten or something fried in glutined oil, I get reflux. I've been gluten free since 2013 but I do get sloppy sometimes at restaurants.

Either that, or I really shouldn't eat beef and dairy, which I've been eating A LOT, and have since stopped. I'm mainly on smoothies and steamed veg. I had a porkchop tonight.

I really don't eat out much anymore, but cooking is a slog TBH.

Perhaps I need to revisit my enterolab results and eat accordingly instead of slacking. The only thing I've consistently eliminated over the past 5 years is gluten, and that's been the 80/20 for me.

Hugs to all,
Nancy

I must be losing it. I've been here before and used HCL before. I am starting to forget things.

Hi Nancy,

I had forgotten about that thread too, but I have to agree with the discussion in the thread you referenced — low carb is probably the best way to treat a chronic reflux problem.

I've been taking Betaine HCL for lunch and dinner for a few months now and feel it has helped break food down better. I also remember when I was first starting to heal with my GERD that it was said we need to be Gluten and Dairy free and get good VitD and Magnesium.

Other than that, working out the low carb - decent fat sounds like a good idea too.
