IBS can be diagnosed by listening to bowel sounds

Post by Patricia »

I found a link to this Medscape article in my email today and was wondering what my MC family thinks of that:
https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/89 ... 5767&faf=1

I am curious whether they will rule out IBS if the sounds are too loud and the patients actually have MC. Or will more MC patients be misdiagnosed as having IBS? Or maybe more MC patients will be diagnosed in the future just based on the sounds if doctors start having different sound categories for different diseases.

Love,

Patricia

Hi Patricia,

Interesting concept. I've maintained for years that an MC patient could easily identify another MC patient across a room by the loud gurgling sounds we make when the disease is active. But the article talks about relatively quiet digestive noises. MC would be a piece of cake to identify, compared with that. In my opinion, the author is definitely on to something. But if gastroenterologists have trouble associating a digestive disease with food sensitivities, how in the world could they ever be trained to recognize the differences in digestive sounds for the various digestive system diseases.

Love,

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Wow, this sure would be a step backwards. Since IBS is the lack of a diagnosis, rather an “undiagnosed” problem, I can see many people suffering needlessly from this if healthcare practitioners think IBS is a diagnosis. I have spent way too many years in the “IBS waste basket” because so many healthcare people don’t understand what IBS is and isn’t. Kind of looks like yet another way to market a drug just for IBS.👹
