The Vagus Nerve

Post by Lilja »

Hi all,

After having lived with CC for 8 years, I have read almost everything there is to read about the disease, and now my eyes fell on the vagus nerve https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5808284/

And I also found this statement " How the vagus functions: “A main characteristic of this system is its bidirectionality, where a neuro-endocrino-immunological connection is implicated. In general, the gut-brain axis is important regulating gastric and intestinal function and energy homeostasis. The tenth cranial nerve or vagus nerve, with its both afferent and efferent fibers, is a link between the gastrointestinal tract and the brain."

Some of us struggle in the dark, and search for an answer. But, have any of you been aware of the fact that we have a nerve going right through our body that is connected to so many functions jn our bodies? And, that this nerve is also connected to our gut?

Hi Lilia,

Yes, most of us are familiar with the vagus nerve (often referred to as the "second brain"). A search of the archives brings up past threads about it, some going all the way back to 2006.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

When my mom had a biopsy of her thyroid the intern hit her vagus nerve. They were sending her home when she told my sister-in-law that she had to use the ladies room. She messed her pants. She said everything came out. She is most definitely aware of the connection!
