My first relapse - any tips on what to do?

My first relapse - any tips on what to do?

Hi all,

With careful diet and many of the other tips suggested on this webpage, I went into remission (and got of entocourt) after about a year after diagnosis. Unfortunately, after nearly 2 years of remission, it appears I've relapsed (stress and a few too many instances of cheating on my diet).

Do you have any tips for how to quickly quell the relapse? I still have some of my entocourt and will probably go back on the drugs to calm my system, but if there are any other tips that may help bring me back to remission (and preferably, avoid the drugs), I'd greatly appreciate the advice.

Hi BT,

Relapses can be tough to overcome, because they are often associated with stress, and minimizing stress is usually much easier said than done. Sometimes, learning how to control the stress can do the trick. But often, it takes more than that. In some cases, remission can be even more elusive than it was during the original recovery. If you find it necessary to go back on budesonide for a while, most people in that situation find that anything less than a full dose is ineffective. But after you regain control you might be able to taper the dose sooner.

If you have had any hormonal changes lately (such as HRT), you might look closely at that, because MC is definitely affected by hormonal changes. If you feel that the relapse might be associated with histamine issues, you might try an antihistamine each morning for a day or two to see if that helps.

Others here are more capable than I am regarding advice on overcoming stress, so I won't even attempt that. My main suggestion is that if you decide to resume taking budesonide, you will save a lot of time if you start with a full dose, and then listen to your body for clues on when to lower the dose (at the first signs of constipation).

Immediately go back to the few food regimen and I also found I had to eliminate all supplements for awhile. I was able to
get out of my reflare but it took awhile mostly because I did not go to the few food regimen quick enough and I was
too stubborn to eliminate supplements. Once I did both of these I went back into remission.

I agree with Brandy,

Minimal supplement except stay with VitD and Mag and return to the safe minimal foods....it doesn't take long for the body to readjust from a stress situation if it doesn't have to work over time dealing with extra things like odd foods, extra burdens, no sleep etc....

Here's hoping you can work out the stress sooner than later.

I agree with Brandy and Erica. I'm in the same position at the moment, due to drinking to much wine during my holiday. One week ago I returned to a very strict diet (only rice, banana, bone broth, chicken, herbal tea and a lot of water) and no supplements. After 4 days my situation improved and now I ate a little bit more (well cooked vegetables).
Tex is right that maybe hormons have something to do with it. I have HRT and I have also hormonal problems since a few weeks (at the same time as my relapse started).
I also thought about restarting budesonide again, but I'm glad I didn't do it. I'm convinced that diet is the only way for me. Succes!
