GRAIN BRAIN BY DAVID PERLMUTTER, MD
Has anyone read this book and if so what do you think. I was wondering if his recommendations might help inflammation. He also recommends GF, maybe SF, DF, and of course I've been those and more for 9 years. Maybe carbs DO add to inflammation as he says.
Thanks, Beverly
Thanks, Beverly
HI Beverly,
I haven't read the book, but from what I've seen in the past regarding his beliefs, I think he has a lot on the ball. And I agree with him about Carb's in general and grains in particular.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Tex, I just don't how you manage to tend your huge flock so well, but thank you. You are always there for all of us. I'm at the point where I'm about ready to order DHA, Alpha Lipoic Acid, and Reservatrol, and then to cut carbs. I already use a lot of coconut oil, so shouldn't be a huge problem for me, except that I really don't want to lose any more weight, have been stable at 115, but could use about 10#. We'll see.
Thanks again.

To the extent it helps, I do very well when I focus heavily on meats, eggs, healthy oils (olive and coconut), a limited number of unprocessed carbs (typically cassava or taro root), no grains, and very limited fruit (to reduce carbs and sugars). I got off the drugs (and deal only with bloating) using this approach. I'm interested in your comment about DHA, ALA and Reservatrol. What led you to those supplements? I'm always interested in anything that may help...
that is definitely from reading Grain Brain. His protocol is these anti-inflammatory supplements of which I need to skip turmeric because I tried the pills once and was not easy on my gut.(a little of the spice in cooking doesn't seem to hurt) Also, probiotics, but too hard to find any DF. Then he recommends going GF, low carb, and using coconut oil. So nothing to lose here except the cost of adding these supplements.

I have found the KAL brand Saccharomyces Boulardii (being GF, DF, SF, EF) are working nicely for me as a probiotic. Some tend to need it at different stages in their MC journey, I'm at that stage right now (into this healing 3 years now).

Thanks Beverly. Good to know what he recommends. I too couldn't handle turmeric, so I don't take it. You'll have to let us know how the supplement regiment goes!bevfromwa wrote:that is definitely from reading Grain Brain. I am no expert and have no idea if this is correct, but I wonder if the fact that Saccharomyces Boulardii is a yeast (and not bacteria) makes a difference on how it affects (negatively or positively) people with MC?Erica P-G wrote:I have found the KAL brand Saccharomyces Boulardii (being GF, DF, SF, EF) are working nicely for me as a probiotic. Dr Perlmutter is a very credible source of information. I have read all his books. Like everything else with MC you have to be careful and adjust recommendations to comply with your own sensitivities. In general I have followed a no grain very low carb paleo diet for years plus I eliminated all the things I am sensitive to.. Works for me.

I took this probiotic: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0056 ... UTF8&psc=1
for several months after having cdiff last Summer and felt it was helping me to great regularity but then contracted MC in February so don't know whether it was actually helping me or not. Tex thinks its possible that it did more harm than good so I'm no longer taking it. I guess everyone is different and sometimes its just a guessing game.

thanks to all who have joined in this thread, I appreciate it. The more I am learning the more I think I will wait a month or two before jumping in. I have trips planned July and August, and don't want to be experimenting on diet, etc. until I get back. Also, I think I should see my primary to get her take and see if she will ok some tests Perlmutter recommends. I have very recent lab work on some of it, but not all.
Re the Jarrow S Boulardii, darn, that was the one I identified on Vitacost as being a good deal. Well, as we say, everyone is different.
I am now about to do a post about Just Mayo in case anyone reading this uses it.
Best,
Beverly
