Martha, I was just thinking about you and wondering how you are doing. While I'm so happy to hear how well you were doing I'm so sorry to hear that you're in a flare. I don't have any advice to give you because I have never had a flare. But I will keep you close in my thoughts and prayers and I pray that this will soon be over for you. I'll be following to see how you're doing. {hugs}

Thanks, Martha! My husband is doing better. I don't think he'll ever be 100% but we are grateful for each day that he's able to be up & moving. He has brain fog much like I had when I first had LC. I don't get annoyed at him because I've been there, done that! Take care!

Hi Martha,
I'm sorry to hear that you've been tripped up by a virus or whatever is the cause. Since no one in your family has caught this, I'm wondering about the possibility of something other than rotovirus, such as a tick-borne virus, or Giardiasis. The other cases of rotovirus may have just been a coincidence. Did you have any fever or neurological symptoms along with this? Have you had an antibody test, or stool culture, to rule out some of those possibilities?
If it's just a lingering MC flare due to the rotovirus, I don't know what to tell you, because if we've taught you well (and it appears that we have) you know as much about treating this disease as we do. That said, I realize that your goal was realistic, and you know that if you can inspire enough people to focus on this, they/we can surely come up with some practical suggestions, and maybe a few novel ideas.
For example, if it was indeed rotovirus, they may have shuffled the demographics of your gut biome. I wonder if taking a probiotic might help to restore the balance. Have you been able to tolerate any probiotics, or do they always just make things worse?

Thank you so Tex for your suggestions! I added a little banana a couple of days ago to my safe food and it seems to be helping. The rumbling is slowing down and my D is getting better. It was scary because I had went for 6 days on mostly water. The D was unreal and once I added my safe food just Cornish hen and broth, it seemed my rumbling was getting worse. Boy i dont wish whatever that was on anyone! I'm hopeful again.....it doesn't take much to mess with our unstable gut, does it?
Yes I had a fever. My brother and his wife in Utah got sick, but nothing like me. My husband and kids stayed clear of it though. Probiotics usually go thru me, but I haven't tried them in years. That's why I started eating bananas.
Thank you again!!

It's good to hear that you're doing better. Probably the worst part of a relapse is the uncertainty — not knowing for sure what's actually causing the symptoms and wondering whether our treatment is going to get the job done.
Thanks for the update.

Martha,
It's really good to hear from you although I'm sad that it's because you had a flare. If there's one thing I've learned from this disease, it's to not take anything for granted. Some days I just go cruising along for a period of time, and then I feel like for every step I take forward, I go backwards at least 3. I guess it's just the nature of the disease! Hope you get to feeling better soon!

The uncertainty was really scary. I kept asking my husband how long can I go without food....
Jari, exactly that's how I am every spring. Once pollen season hits I'm reminded that this disease is lifelong.
Today I have strayed a little from my broth Cornish hen meal, we shall see. I'm crossing my fingers. I'm just glad I can look at food now without getting sick and grossed out.

Well I cannot get this flare under control and I have been putting off removing everything from my diet. The D has stopped mostly but the gas pains and bladder spasms are 24/7. I have got to get this under control because I start working pretty soon. Once my kids and I start back to school, there is little time for anything. So today is day 1 of taking everything back out of my diet!

Thanks for posting these updates, they're very helpful for others. Sometimes this disease seems to have a mind of it's own. Good luck, I hope you can find the key soon.
I find that the heat of summer really magnifies my histamine issues, forcing me to restrict foods that are not all that high in histamine content.

Thank you Tex! Yes, I do believe histamines are causing some of my problems. It has always been my biggest problem in my colitis journey! I could only eat the bananas for a couple of days. I removed those already. But dairy I believe is the main culprit this time. We shall see....

I can usually get away with half a banana and cashew butter most days (after any reactions have settled down). But beyond that, it doesn't take much almond butter, for example, to exceed my limit. Milk may not be much of a problem (if you tolerate casein OK), but cheeses and yogurt (anything that is fermented) could definitely be high-histamine.

I've noticed heat is a big nemesis for me still....that coupled with any extra exertion of energy and I can set my guts off....add all that to a potential hormonal cycle that I don't really track anymore and it sets me up for disaster everytime!
I have to really back off my foods and eat really simple as to what worked in the beginning. Yes even after healing for 3 years I to get in a bind from time to time...it really stinks!

Hi Martha - I am new to all of this so I can't add anything helpful but I just wanted to say I wish you a very fast recovery. I couldn't imagine dealing with this while my children were little.
Actually, I just remembered something that might help a little. I used fresh ginger root in my drinks when I had nausea. Sometimes it helped.
Best wishes to you.

Thank you guys!
Erica, My hormones still messes with my MC too and season changes.
Jari, I so hope your dental work gets resolved quickly and you are feeling better soon! It really does seem like it is always something.
Tex, I haven't been able to eat cheese or yogurt since I started my diet, 3 years ago. I thought it may be casein that is troubling me and that virus caused another sensitivity or I am still inflammed. Although, at the present, it seems no matter what I am eating is causing issues. I am going to give it a few months, if no resolve I will send off another sample to Entrolab to see if a new sensitivity has occurred.
Thank you MamaFill, I so hope you can get your MC under control too!!
My children are wanting to finish out the summer with all these activities and I just want to stay on the recliner with my heating pad
