Dr Gundry - Lectin Shield
I suspect I know before I ask that this product is too good to be true, but anyone ever hear of Dr Gundry's research or this product? Or is this just along the same line as the Glutenease supplement? If so Glutenease is much less expensive.

I'm not familiar with the product, but if you've read my second book (about MC) you know that lectins are only one of a group of anti-nutrients that can cause leaky gut (and therefore, food sensitivities). Besides lectins, there are chitins, benzoxazinoids, amylase trypsin inhibitors (ATIs), and presumably others. That said, lectins are indeed a major problem, and more is probably known (and written) about them than any of the other anti-nutrients.
Lectin issues can be minimized by pre-soaking (certain beans, for example), and then discarding the water, before thoroughly cooking them. Properly soaked and cooked, most lectin problems can be eliminated (or largely minimized).

I took it that wheat is a lectin due to its shield or cover around the seed....but gluten is still on the inside and yes we don't digest it but apparently it affects the lining of our intestines - zonulin that is in the gluten keeps hammering away at our villi until it creates openings inbetween the villi therefore letting microscopic particles to enter our blood stream therefore our immune system ramps up and that is how we have other immune system issues and illness.
That's really an 'in a nutshell' explanation.....I'm sure the lectin/shield works for many other food cases, but the jury is out for me whether it works for gluten. I have not tried it.

Well, sure it does. Wheat gluten is one of the worst lectins out there (next to caster beans), but that's not the only problem with wheat gluten. Why would you want to eat wheat, when your immune system produces antibodies against it? If you're willing to fall for a pitch claiming that some obscure product will make you immune to the hazards of eating wheat, I wouldn't give 2 cents for your odds of reaching or remaining in remission. If there were any "miracle cures" around, don't you think we would all be using it? How long do you think you could keep a cure in a bottle that really works, a secret from all other MC patients?Kathy wrote:But doesn't wheat also contain Lectins?

I don't plan to eat wheat Tex. I was only asking how it compares to Glutenease as an insurance policy against hidden gluten or cross-contamination at a restaurant, etc. Or yes, for the occasional cheat on a special occasion. And I didn't "fall for the pitch" as you put it - That's wy I was asking if anyone was familiar with it.
Hi Kathy,
I was pretty sure you weren't going to fall off the wagon — I was just ribbing you a little. Initially, everyone looks for an easy cure, but of course everyone eventually discovers that the diet is the only reliable long-term solution.
I really don't know how any of the products out there compare with one another (there are apparently several others on the market), but I've heard only good things about Glutenease, so if I wanted an insurance policy to fall back on when eating out, I would probably pick it.
Look at it this way: A single meal containing lectins (not gluten) is not likely to cause an MC patient any problems. It's eating them (lectins) regularly over the long-term that causes problems. On the other hand, a single meal that's cross-contaminated with gluten will definitely cause problems for virtually any of us. So when eating out, gluten should be the main concern, not lectins (in my opinion).
