Neck pain/Back pain
Just curious if anyone else experiences neck stiffness, neck pain, back pain, and joint pain.
I was diagnosed with LC 2 months ago, but have had chronic neck & back pain for years. I just thought it was stress. Now I’m wondering if it was an early symptom of LC before the D started? Is it possible to have other symptoms before the D finally shows up? Anyone know the cause of the neck/joint/back pain?
I do daily stretches/pilates type exercises morning and night. I get a massage every couple months as I can afford it. I use essential oils and take hot baths. What else can I do to help neck & back pain?

Hi Alicia,
The arthritis-type pains that are associated with MC were noted in the original medical description. They are apparently caused by leaky gut (which is caused by gluten sensitivity). With leaky gut, peptides of partially-digested food and other things that should never get into the bloodstream, are able to leak into the bloodstream. Besides causing food sensitivities, they are circulated all over the body, and since the digestive system doesn't know what to do with them, they are deposited in various organs and joints. This is what causes the inflammation and all the aches and pains.
Before I changed my diet, my arthritis was so bad that on some days I had to use two canes, just to get around. After I changed my diet, it all slowly faded away. Now, if I accidentally get glutened, a stiff, sore neck is one of my main symptoms, and it lingers a few days.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Hi Alicia - I have had back and joint pain since my late teens with horrible TMJ pain in my twenties. I assumed all the prescription Advil that I took for my jaw caused the mc. I have only had bowel issues for about a year or so, but it's hard to say what caused what.
One thing that might help your back is a foam roller.

Hi Alicia,
I had horrible neck/back/joint pain with my MC. And mine started in high school, years before any of the 'classic' MC symptoms. I, too, got into yoga and massages to help alleviate my pain (and got certified as a yoga teacher so I didn't have to take classes all the time!). It helped, a lot, but never really got rid of the tension and pain.
Once I started treating the MC with diet, supplements, and LDN, the back/neck pain and associated headaches have dramatically improved.
I honestly believe that these types of peripheral symptoms are due to the autoimmune inflammatory reaction of MC. I still have neck stiffness/pain if I experience high levels of stress, which says to me that the stress is reactivating my autoimmunity and therefore the inflammation.
This is why the yoga is so effective; it not only stretched out my muscles and connective tissues, but helped me significantly lower my stress. LDN now does the rest for me (I still do regular yoga)and, unless I'm having a high stress day, I don't have joint problems.

Eshuler,
I had a similar experience with back and neck pain in high school. It’s nice to know I’m not alone. I completely agree with the stress being a contributing factor to the pain. I regularly do pilates and a new workout I’ve discovered called Essentrics, which is very fluid stretches and so helpful for relieving back pain.
I’m encouraged to hear you have found what works for you to help alleviate the pain! Thank you for the suggestions!
