Collagen supplements

Post by DelRey »

About 6 months ago, I started taking collagen supplements and believe it helped created my latest episode of Collageneous colitis. I had been in remission for 8 years. I recently started taking the probiotic Saccharomyces Boulardii and believe it is a godsend! I am just wondering if anyone else has experienced problems with collagen supplements?

Collagen is supposed to help the gut.
Bone broth is one way of getting it.
Bouillardi made me very sick when I was diagnosed. Many of us can’t take probiotics. We’re all different.

Saccharomyces Boulardii

Post by DelRey »

I feel like I've cheated by taking Saccharomyces Boulardii. Even though my first few capsules were followed by explosive diarrhea, I felt healthier after that. I did my best to take it on an empty stomach (late at night and first thing in the morning). I've read so many posts where people are struggling with their meds trying to cure this. I've been there and done that. I am just saying it might be worth trying this probiotic. I do take 400mg of Magnesium Glycinate at night. I tend to get constipated lately and Sacc.B is known for doing that. For the past 2 weeks I've been testing foods. So far, if I stay away from alcohol and spicy foods, I seem to be doing fine. I will be seeing my GI doctor (finally) on Monday and going to ask him to run tests for my food sensitivities. I did not give up any of the food groups but, basically tried to follow a somewhat low FODMAP diet for the past 6 weeks. If I am shown to be sensitive to wheat, or eggs, or soy or anything I will give it up after the tests show it. Am I fooling myself here, or did I stumble across a miracle probiotic?

Hi Donna,
I reached remission with diet changes. When I tried probiotics I went backward and had cramping and gut issues that were worse than what my LC caused. They definitely were not helpful for me but as Monique said, we are all different.

Best wishes,
Carol

I've been taking saccharomyces boulardii for many years. A few times I tried to stop and always got very sick about a week later. I am not exactly sure what my problem is, though (IBS-D, microscopic colitis and Crohn's are all possible).

Collagen peptides

Post by nancyl »

Hi Monique,
I was wondering if you were still taking collagen peptides? My hair is shedding and arthritis is a bit bothersome and I was thinking a little in my daily smoothie might be a good thing. My granddaughter takes Vitals Protein collagen peptides. I have been on Imuran for years and decided to wean myself off. I am a bit nervous about it so taking a half dose 25 mg every other day instead of 25 mg a day. So far no difference.

Thank you
Nancy

I'm not taking it now but I've taken the great lakes collagen in the green can. It mixes into soups etc.

Hi Nancy,
Figured I'd chime in as I have been adding the vitals protein to my protein smoothie every night for close to 6-7 months and have had no negative reactions. My nails are growing in stronger and think it's due to this product.

Hi everyone,
Lots of great information. I have a smoothie every day and think I may try adding collagen powder.

I can see reading this where we all have different reactions to supplements. I have been taking saccharomyces boulardii since I was at the beginning stages of explosive diarrhea about 6 years ago and have not had any problems. Right now I am taking an extra probiotic (Soloray) for the mouth and throat due to a dental issue.

I also put Vega protein powder in my smoothie, not the full dose though, and wonder if I would still use that along with the vitals protein collagen peptides. I'm thinking that would probably too much protein.

Hi Monique, remember me!?

I've been dying to try the Collagen...how are you doing on it?

BTW, yes we are all different...I've done very well on a good Probiotic but thinking of adding in Saccharomyces Boulardii. I've been in remission since 2013.

I had forgotten how wonderful this group is!
Diagnosed with Lymphocytic Colitis in July, 2012 then with Celiac in November, 2012.
