Beef gelatin versus bone broth

Post by JulieHaggy »

Hi, I found a powdered beef gelatin that is made from bovine hide (sounds awful, rght?!) Would it have the same healing properties as beef bone broth? Thanks for your help.

Hi Julie,

I'm certainly no expert on nutrition, but I doubt that gelatin (collagen) made from bovine hide would even come close to providing the range of nutritients furnished by homemade bone broth. Bone broth contains collagen plus most (possibly all, for all I know) of the amino acids (plus vitamins, minerals and trace elements) needed for good healing and general health. If you want a collagen supplement, it's very likely that plain old Jello (or some other brand of gelatin) would provide just as much collagen as cow hide, and it would probably taste a lot better. But I'm just guessing — I've never actually tried powdered cow hide.

Agree with Tex's reply above.
The body needs the amino acids and minerals just as much as collagen for healing.

Thanks, Tex and Gabes. I will be skipping the powdered cow hide!
