Anxiety issues, need help please.
In this last yr. I have gotten along just great as long as I stay GF and dairy free. My anxiety has just gotten the best of me. I can’t drive on the interstate and just worry and stay awake from 3 am on:(
My family dr has been great to listen to me and try things that I’ve learned from this board.
He put me on Cymbolta prob 6 mths. Ago and I didn’t have any potty issues with it but I did have major sweating..... so bad that I took myself off, very slowly. Last wk we decided to try Lexpro. I know..... I’ve read where no one on here can take it but I was desperate to try it. I got so sick after just one hour of taking it. It’s been a long 3 days. I called the pharmacist and she got back with me today and said it has mannose which is gluten!!
I don't know where to go from here. I’ve got to find something. I take at least 2 of the magnesium and 1 D3 each day, Dr’s Best. I was taking 4 of the mags but have cut back.
I also take metanx each day. Any help would be appreciated.
Love,
Connie

I don't know that Lexapro has mannose, but even if it does, mannose is a relative of glucose (sugar) not gluten.Grahm wrote:. . . . Lexpro. . . . it has mannose which is gluten!!
I've taken both of those antidepressants and didn't find them useful for anxiety at all, or even for depression. I've taken alprazolam (Xanax) for anxiety attacks, generalized anxiety and as a sleep aid for 30 years. It's very effective after all these years for me, and I've never needed to increase my average daily dosage.
Kilt,
Thanks for replying. That is what my pharmacist told me so I don’t know.......
Anyhoo, I can’t take it.
I have alprazolam also, but alway just use in case of an emergency . I just hate to have to depend on it but I may have to.
I was hoping someone would know something more natural that I could turn to.
Love,
Connie

So sorry you're going through this. As someone who has dealt with anxiety and panic attacks for over 40 years now, I feel your pain and know the struggle to try to function. I broke down and took Prozac about 25 years ago and am still on it. It helped a lot until about 10 years ago, I think my body has become immune to it but I really don't want to increase the dosage. My doc wanted me to add Gabapentin, which I did, (low dose, 3 x a day) and it helped, but I really didn't want to be addicted or dependent on yet another drug. I take tranquilizers as needed but don't want to become dependent on them, either.
6 weeks ago I started seeing a nutritionist who does Nutrition Response Testing and I am taking some supplements as a result of his testing. He determined that my adrenals were shot and that was the first issue we needed to address and I have to say that my anxiety, ability to handle stress, mood, and enery are SO MUCH BETTER. I've already weaned off the Gabapentin to 1 a day and will soon stop that one, too. I haven't needed to take a tranquilizer in a while, whereas I was grabbing for them once or twice a day for a while there.
I don't know if this is a potential solution for you, but I definitely feel the difference and it doesn't require me to take medication. Unfortunately if you talk to your medical doctor about adrenal issues, they will probably dismiss it as being nonsense.
Hang in there - you will find something that works - don't quit trying.

Diagnosed November 2004, Used Asacol and Lialda, sometimes worked, sometimes made it worse. Entocort always works but hate it. Remission only lasts 3-6 months and then back on Entocort. Enterolab test July 2017, now gluten free. Time will tell!

Wow She, that's very interesting. I think I'd like to try that!
Connie - I have also dealt with depression and anxiety for years. My husband has had mild anxiety for several years after a stroke, and all three of my kids have it too. Each of us takes something different. It can sometimes take a while to find the right one for you. I took cymbalta for years then it stopped working for me. I've tried many things. Right now I am taking Buspar and Pristiq. Not great, but pretty good. It's best to go to a psychiatrist because they specialize in these meds. My family doctor prescribed the cymbalta and then lexapro before she sent me to the psychiatrist. She admits that as a gp, she just didn't know all the ins and outs of those meds. I hope you find something that works for you soon. Also, I would take the xanax in the meantime. Anxiety is very stressful on our bodies.

Hi Connie,
Anxiety is a classic symptom of a chronic magnesium deficiency. Big Pharma is getting rich selling antidepressants and anxiety medications when the problem is nothing more than a magnesium deficiency. I realize that you're already taking magnesium, but I was also (I was taking 300 mg/day), when I had a major magnesium deficiency creep up on me. I had all the symptoms you are experiencing, plus kidney stones. It was maddening. None of my doctors had a clue, but some of them offered to prescribe an anti-anxiety medication.
But all it took to correct the problem and eliminate the symptoms was to increase my magnesium intake. If you're worried about taking too much magnesium, get your doctor to order an RBC (Red Blood Cell) magnesium test (the serum test they usually order is useless).
The reason why the serum test is almost useless is because it measures magnesium in the bloodstream even though the blood contains only about 1 to 2 % of the total magnesium in the body and that amount is closely regulated because magnesium is a vital electrolyte. The so-called "normal" range for magnesium is just plain wrong. Why? Because approximately 80 % of the subjects in that study were magnesium deficient, so the "normal" range for magnesium is based on corrupt data. I agree with Dr. Carolyn Dean who says that the correct normal range for the RBC test should be at least 6.0–6.5 mg/dL. Most labs show the "normal" range as 3.9-5.8 mg/dL. Here's a reference:
Magnesium RBC Blood Test
The main problem with the serum magnesium test is that it will always show normal levels of magnesium unless most of your cells are dangerously low on magnesium and you haven't ingested any magnesium. Your body can be out of magnesium, but if you have ingested any lately, a serum test will still show a "normal" level.
I hope this helps. This is such a common problem that I wrote a book about it, but I doubt that the people who need magnesium the worst will ever read it.
Love,
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
I agree with Tex.....
in 2015 when I first started on this forum my anxiety was at its worse.....hard to sleep, pay attention, fretted about everything, cried at the smallest things.
My VitD level was puny 20 something, and I bet I had minimal Magnesium in my system....so since then I took what my body could handle internally and I may not have really known what that might have been since water D was a normal occurrence then so I did lots of external Magnesium lotion and sprays during the first 6 months. I started feeling better anxiety became less and less, so did any reflux, and sleeping was so much nicer after my body healed some and I wasn't making bathroom trips numerous times in the night.
My first year was a lot of learning...so by year 2 I went full bore and took minimum 500 -600 magnesium with 10,000iu VitD for a good strong 7-8 months.
that amount of VitD and Mag was what my body needed big time....I have to say ever since then I am able to tell when I start to feel uneasy again so I up my magnesium even if it is to take it 3 times a day at 200mg per pop. I also don't forget to keep taking my VitD 5000 iu (daily during the late Fall thru early Spring and then every other day as the days get longer).
Anyway....I hope you find your balance to feeling better soon :-)
Hugs

I took antidepressants and anti-anxiety medication for years. I had major depression that had been labeled "treatment resistant" and major anxiety. I was suicidal and had been hospitalized several times. I changed my diet to low carb paleo, eliminated all my food sensitivities, and took magnesium glycinate (600 mg daily) along with vitamin d which I adjusted according to my test results. At the same time I very slowly weaned myself off of all medications which had never done me much good anyway. This is the way I continue to eat and supplement. It has been nearly a decade, I believe, since I have taken any medication, seen any professional because of these issues or suffered any major depression or anxiety. I think all aspects of my program have been important, eating very low carb to stabilize my blood sugar, removing all offending foods and taking the supplements. I stick to this regimen scrupulously and all remains well.

Brandy,
Yes, I still take 600mgs. Although I am sure that magnesium helps me, I also believe that the low carb diet is crucial to my well being including my mood. I consider the diet my foundation and add the supplements to do just that, supplement. What I notice most about the magnesium is that without it I get bad leg cramps. I hope it helps your mother.

Thank each and everyone of you for responding to my post. You are the BEST!!
What do you eat with the low carb diet? I eat meat, chicken, fish, salads and veggies.
I do eat potatoes and rice, especially when I know I have to have something. I do eat some fruit but it is very limited.
Thanks again,
Connie
