Will I Ever Know?
Hello. I've been very fortunate in that I haven't had a flare since I've been in remission. Yesterday after work I felt a little "off" and then the explosive D started. I had to run to the bathroom around 8 times until I took 4 Pepto tablets. So now I'm trying to figure out what caused it. I rarely eat tuna and I had tuna for lunch yesterday (Wild Planet SkipJack), just tuna and salt. I have been using essential oils on my back but they didn't seem to bother me. I'm left to wonder if the tuna or the essential oils caused it or if I just had some type of bug, but I doubt that I'll eat tuna again and I stopped using the oil. It scared me beyond words and lately I've been thinking that I'm tired of eating the same thing all the time but that's much better than what I went through last evening. My thoughts are with those of you who have been through bad flares. I didn't have to go today so I think whatever it was is over (fingers and legs crossed!)

Hi Marcia,
Sorry to hear about that "incident". The timing would have been about right if the tuna was the problem. So I'm inclined to pick the tuna, but that's just a guess based on the fact that I'm unaware of any intestinal viruses going around at the moment in this neck of the woods. But maybe they're out there and I'm just not aware of them. Or maybe they're currently widespread in the rest of the U. S. and we've just been lucky down here.
If there are any viruses going around, I'm going to change my vote, because your workplace would surely be a high-risk area. If you "rarely" eat tuna, that implies that you don't normally have any reaction to it. That would suggest that maybe you were just unlucky enough to encounter a bad batch of tuna. After all, having MC doesn't exempt us from the common food issues that "normal" people sometimes have to deal with.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Thanks, Tex. I'm wondering if it was a virus, too. My husband said his stomach was churning the next day but he didn't have D. It could be something that I picked up at work. Working in long term care there is always something to dodge! I'm not going to eat tuna any time soon, though!
