Ok new friends - another question. I think I have been eating rice, red potatoes, bone broth, clean animal protein and mushy veg for 3-4 dyas. Can't recall when I started ... and today I had 3 pretty unsatisfactory rounds of WD ... while at the same time feeling constipated like I haven't felt in a long time.

Took my Vitamin D and took 400 mg of Magnesium, plus an Epsom salt bath ... walking, tons and tons of water, hot water, etc ...

But just feel bound up.

I don't mean to look a gift horse in the mouth, but is this normal?

Is this my poor body freaking out because all of a sudden it is not getting any fiber?

Is this just part of the journey and my body will figure things out?

Does this mean I am eating something that doesn't agree with me? Seems weird for that to be true, though it could be because I haven't tested.

I am also putting healthy, organic coconut oil on the white rice I cook, cooking my salmon in coconut oil, etc.

Happy, happy to be patient, but I don't want to cause more damage.

Took 6 mg of Budesonide today ...

So, looking for a bit of advice from the pros

So the Magnesium I have been taking is Magnesium Biglycinate by Thorne, powder form. I was just doing 200 mg because I didn't want to cause the WD to get worse. I added another dose today to make 400 mg. And yes, you will see I drank one dose this morning and one dose late this afternoon after work.

I also have a magnesium spray that I added back in.

I pulled out some old Magnesium Citrate I had in the back of the medicine cabinet in case I get desperate. I have not touched it yet!

I drank hot water this morning followed by a cup of coffee with MCT oil.

I had a just-ripe banana for breakfast, with a Zyrtec and Vitamin D3 5000 mg.

Then, I had- as a snack - some Jasmine white rice with coconut oil and salt
1/2 piece of grass-fed beef
Magnesium drink

For lunch I had 1 small red potato, 2 slices of well-cooked, peeled squash cooked with coconut oil and a 6 oz. salmon filet cooked in coconut oil. Only salt as my seasoning.

Later in the day I had more Jasmine rice with coconut oil.

Ohhhh ... I did have a couple spoonfuls of coconut butter because I got SO HUNGRY for something sweet that I thought I was going to scream.

Took an Epsom salt bath and drank another 200 mg of the Magnesium Biglycinate.

Hardly want to touch dinner ... just feel like an overstuffed pillow. An engorged tick! A sausage busting out of its casing! You get the picture.

For dinner, my hubs is going to grill some more salmon as well as 4 organic, local, grass-fed chicken thighs with skin on, some potato and mor eof the squash. All with coconut oil and salt.

MC tends to always keep us guessing when we are recovering. Recovery is seldom smooth, and it's often described as two steps forward and one step back (unless you happen to be one of the few who make one step forward and two steps back). Constipation is a side effect of budesonide. It can be a problem, especially for someone who is very sensitive to budesonide. We have several members who can only tolerate 3 mg (even as a starting dose). Generally, as a rule of thumb, we recommend reducing the dose to the next step down if this (constipation) happens during a budesonide taper. Where are you in your budesonide treatment?

Also, I doubt that this applies, but if you happen to be taking any opioid pain killers, they present a high risk for impaction in the colon, that could cause break-through WD.

Ok - I will switch just to the topical magnesium for now.

And Tex, when I am on 9 mg Budesonide, my GI system is the best it has ever, ever been. I LOVE Budesonide. It is just when I get to the end of the taper that I run into trouble ... but in this entire 2-year run with LC I have not had an issue at all with constipation. Ever.

However, I have always been a plant-based, lots of fiber eater.

So, after 4 days of going low fiber, I feel a bit backed up.

I will stay the course on 3 mg or 6 mg of Budesonide for a few more days. Up the water. Up the exercise and keep going.

Thank you!

If you feel that you need the fiber, try it, but proceed with caution, because virtually all of the rest of us get diarrhea from more than minimal amounts of fiber while we are recovering. Paddle carefully when you are on uncharted waters.

A decent day today:

Coffee with MCT oil
Hot water
Bone Broth
Banana
Zyrtec, Vitamin D, Magnesium spray, 3 mg Budesonide

WD, but no urgency ...

MASSAGE! Yay! All about self-care during this stage ... that's what I picked up from this forum

Chicken thigh with skin on - salt
Jasmine Rice with coconut oil and salt
1/2 sweet potato (and I ate the skin to add a touch of fiber)

WD, but not as watery as usual ... so considering that progress

chicken thigh with skin on - salt
Jasmine rice with coconut oil

WD

For dinner I will probably have, you guessed it, one more chicken thigh, some rice and 1/2 a sweet potato

My gut still feels real "full" ... and it is mainly quiet - not a lot of rolling, watery sounds.

I felt mostly in control of things today, even during a massage, even at work ...

I can do this diet. I really can. I will do it for as long as it takes to see this turn around.

If you see that I am doing anything that might be setting me back, please let me know!

I so appreciate everyone's expertise here. Incredible.

I hate to say this.....but maybe it is the chicken that is contributing to the WD thing....since Eggs rate right up there that we don't tolerate well if at all. I know after three years I can only eat some chicken every 3-4 days and still no chicken eggs yet.

A test you can perform that is super easy....is if you put something in your mouth and begin to chew, if it sparks a trip to the bathroom, re-consider that particular food at this time. Maybe re-enter it at a later date after some healing has occurred.

Turkey, Lamb seem to be the top 2 contenders as far as meat goes that most have better luck with, or Game meats that are not aged (like pepperoni). I make bone broths out of game meat bones and seem to do better with that than anything else I've tried, but then we are all different, so every three days try a different meat and get a feel for what seems to be the quiet meal :-)

Cheers

For what it's worth, I can eat chicken every day. But if I eat chicken with the skin on, that can trip me up a bit.

So for me, I now eat only skinless chicken.

Man, this thing is tough to figure out, isn't it? Every. Body. Is. Different.

Best of luck to you.

Sad but true. What is good for some is not necessarily good for others. You'll also find that things you can't eat now may be tolerable after some healing has occurred. I'm into Year 3 of my journey and only started feeling a lot better in the last 3 months. The range of food I can eat has increased slowly. One tool that may help you in your recovery is keeping a food diary so that you can narrow down what food is irritating you.

I love what Tommy wrote: "Every. Body. Is. Different."

Alice, welcome!

MC is a crazy journey but at least you aren't alone. We each have to take baby steps and find what works for us. I agree that a food journal is a good idea and I still keep one after two years.

I had intermittent D and C while I was recovering. And, I am still recovering in that not all bowel movements are normal and I sometimes, though rarely, have D in small amounts. Then, I figure out what I might have consumed.

I, too, while not vegetarian, used to eat lots of fiber. It's hard to watch my husband eat a large cobb salad but I know I am only setting myself back if I eat too much fiber.

Topical magnesium was apparently not enough for me as my magnesium blood test showed my level to be low. However, that may just be me. I take tablets of magnesium glycinate now. Maybe you will be fine with topical but if not, just slow down the Thorne Biglycinate.

While the Enterolab tests may not be right for you at this time because of the budesonide, keep the possibility on the back burner.

In the meantime, try to relax. You apparently have a good sense of humor, so keep it light!

Hi Alice and welcome to our Potty Family :).

Figuring out the food with this disease is a bear. I have been at it for 8 years now, and although I'm vastly better, am still having problems with soft stool. Have not tried Budesonide and have been working with diet alone. Anyhow, what I wanted to add to all the other advise you have received, is that you might be reacting to potatoes. It sounds like you eat quite a bit of them. I ate them in one form or another just about daily, never questioning them, and recently discovered that they are a no no for me  .

I wish you the best of luck on your healing journey. It is extremely frustrating, but with perseverance, you will get there!!!
