Discontinuing Budesonide

Post by mjgarr »

I have been on Budesonide for about a year. I changed Dr's about five months ago. He had me tapering down too 3mg/day. I was on that for 2 months and doing Ok. He took me completely off several weeks ago and now the D is back. He then has put me back on 3mg/day. I hope it isn't a drug I will have to take for the rest of my life. Is this fairly common?

Let me know if anyone else has had this problem.

there are many here that have had return of symptoms once they stop the Budenside.

With the return of D when you stopped the medication, this is an indicator that you are eating or having contact with something that is a trigger.
What is your current Eating /Drinking plan?
Are you taking Vit D3 and magnesium?
are you taking any other medications?

Two options that have helped others.
doing a slower taper off the Budenside ie 1 x 3mg tablet every second day for a few weeks, and if that is successful then do 1x 3mg tablet every third day.
and for quite a few people, taking antihistamines as you taper off budenside has helped to minimise symptoms.

This usually happens for the first reason that Gabes mentioned — a problem with your diet. Is there any chance that your diet is being cross-contaminated? Sometimes we have to reexamine labels carefully to make sure that we're not missing something, and occasionally manufacturers change the ingredients in their processed foods without warning. We have to recheck all the labels whenever we notice symptoms returning.

Is someone still using wheat flour in your house? If so, that's a common source of cross-contamination because when flour is handled, the dust particles scatter and land everywhere (even on utensils in cabinets and in drawers).

I'm not aware of any substitutes for antihistamines, but tapering even more slowly may help.

Rudi again,
Do you think I can finally get off the budesonide if I am gluten free and how long before I should stop? I am currently on one pill and just started the gluten free this week. Thanks for any help

there is no 'fixed' timing for things like this

listen to your body, when you start getting symptoms of constipation, reduce the budesonide.

Rudi,

For most of us, it takes the diet from six weeks to six months, to allow enough time for the gut to heal enough that the symptoms will not relapse when we stop the budesonide. Most of us start the diet when we start taking the budesonide. That works best.

Hi Rudi,

I was a budesonide user and also went GF to get off of budesonide.

There is no hard and fast rule as each of us are different.

Younger folks will heal quicker than older folks.

This is really a w.a.g.--wild a_,_, guess, at the quickest I would guess 6 weeks like Tex said. Again,
longer time is probably better.

It was approximately 10-12 weeks of going GF to when I stopped budesonide. The first 6-8 weeks I was
on budesonide I ate gluten. (I was in denial). I went GF kind of as an insurance policy and because
there was so much discussion about it on this board.

I had no problem getting off of budesonide with the 10 weeks of GF.

But....be aware of the following:

*I was middle aged. Older folks may take longer to heal.
* I was taking no other prescription drugs. Many prescription drugs will prevent going into remission.
* I was 100% GF. No cheats.
* I had a good handle on stress management. I went to yoga 3 mornings a week before work.
* I had no other serious health situations or conditions.

Having walked down this path I would agree with Tex's 6 weeks-6 months time frame.

Also, agree with what Gabes said, listen to your body. If you are having WD do not stop budesonide do not stop
GF but take longer.

You want to have very routine, reliable stool for at least 6 weeks before attempting to stop budesonide.

Slow, long taper while being GF gives you best chance of getting off of budesonide.

Most BP meds will not be a problem for most people.
