Chronic Inflammation Permanently Reshapes Tissue-Resident Immunity in Celiac Disease. Cell, 2019; DOI: 10.1016/j.cell.2018.12.039
Immune cells in the bowel of people who suffer with celiac disease are permanently replaced by a new subset of cells that promote inflammation, suggests a new study.

New research finding sheds light on why MC is for life
This recent research article is in the category of "I wish it wasn't so". Evidently in sensitive people gluten can cause irreversible changes in the immune system in the gut that promote life-long inflammation even after the gluten is removed, even though many of the symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal pain are relieved. The study focused on Celiac Disease, but the authors suggest that other inflammatory gut diseases, such as ulcerative colits, might follow the same path. This can help explain why those of us with MC seem to have so many other food issues and just seem to have a more sensitive gut life long.
