Hi Everyone,
I came across a very helpful tool this week that I wanted to share with you. I found an app for iPhone/iPad (and I'll bet they have an Android version too) called "Wholesome". It allows you to easily keep a food diary electronically, and also see details on the amount of calories, vitamins, minerals, fats, carbs, etc. you're eating on a day-to-day basis. So far, I've found it intuitive and easy to use. You can even enter information on a recipe you've made (ex. paleo muffins), and it will break down the nutrition information by serving. And if you cannot find a food in their database, you can scan the bar code with your phone and the info will pop up. Technology is sure cool these days!
I used to keep a hand-written food diary, but lately I've become curious to know more about those foods- how much magnesium do they contain? Vitamin B? Calcium? etc. etc. You can also click on one of the vitamins or minerals listed in the breakdown of your daily nutrition intake and the app will list a bunch of foods that contain that particular nutrient. So if you're deficient on something and want to know what foods contain that nutrient, you can scan the list and select the foods on your "safe list" and add them to your next meal. Cool stuff!
The only downside is that the app is $3.99 (one time purchase). If you're like me, you want to be sure something is "worth it" before buying it. So far I've had a good experience and have learned a ton about the limited foods that I eat. If you're interested, be sure to take a look- you can browse through a free version before you decide if you want to spend the four bucks and get all of the features.
