?Cross reactivity? Does the Anti-gliadin IgA respond ?

Post by grhandlan@comcast.net »

Does anyone know if the anti-gliadin IgA responds to some of the food that has similar protiens? Like, coffee? or Teff flour? Tapioca? I know oat and corn have their own -- does this mean these do also? I am trying to figure out if I can drink coffee again without having a reaction. My anti-gliandin level from enterolabs 1 year ago was 245... now it is 19. I had made some changes back then which were successful....however i would LOVE to drink coffee again.... yes I it would be safe coffee..... any ideas?
thanks Gena

I am not sure about the specifics of the IgA and coffee, my 20 cents about coffee in general -

- like foods, if you consume processed type coffees then there is high risk of contaminates that are MC triggers (gluten / soy etc)
- whole bean coffee, cheaper mass produced coffees can be higher in toxins, mold etc. good quality, stored well whole bean coffee has minimal scope to cause issues.

the other aspect is do you plan to drink it black or with some sort of milk/creamer

Hi Gail,

No, coffee cannot trigger the production of anti-gliadin IgA antibodies (unless it contains gluten). IgA ELISA tests are very specific and will not respond to similar peptides that are not identical. Coffee might possibly cause the production of other IgA antibodies (that trigger a reaction), but coffee has other ways to trigger D. Coffee is classified as a secretagogue. That implies that it usually promotes secretions from endocrine glands and this can cause urgent diarrhea. But it's not necessarily an MC reaction. This is the same reaction that many normal people have to coffee (people who are not MC patients). They drink their morning coffee, then make a quick trip to the bathroom, and they don't think anything of it. They consider it a good way to "stay regular".

Hi Gena,

Sorry about the name mistake in that last post. I'm lucky that I had a stroke because now I can blame stupid mistakes such as that on the stroke. It couldn't have anything to do with old age, cause I'm only 77.
