Looking for a doctor

Post by dolson »

I've reached a point where I have to see a doctor. I guess a gastroentrologist. Who else is there? There's no doctor in Savannah, so I have to go elsewhere. I saw the list of doctors y'all gave good reviews but I need to know who went to them and did they satisfy your ongoing battle with MC? I can't and won't take steroids or Prednisone. My regular doctor here in Savannah informed me to stay off the stuff. It's destroys your bones and causes cataracts, plus it makes me CRAZY!

I need somebody who understands this disease and will give me something safe to take. I want to be able to talk or converse with the doctor.

Nobody has mentioned DEPRESSION, and that's what I get when the big D problems rears it's ugly head. I feel as though my life is short and I will soon die. I want to walk ten miles, talk to everybody while walking and be happy, and I can't with this disease. I can take IMODIUM and it will work for a day or three and then I explode and the depression hits.

Y'all know where Savannah is, right? My husband informed me to get on this great forum and support group and ASK, so that's what I'm doing. Who do y'all recommend?

Alarm Alarm, looking for a GREAT doctor y'all have seen. I can't take this any longer. Thanks, Dorothy

Hi Dorothy,

I don't personally know any doctors in Georgia, but here are a couple of ideas:

--You could email your state's chapter of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation and tell them that you're looking for a list of doctors who specialize in Microscopic Colitis. I bet they would have a few names.
--Most cities put out a list of "Top Doctors" in each specialty -- does something like that exist in Savannah or a nearby city?
--Typically, research universities are the best bet for good doctors with the latest research. Is there a top university near you?

I am someone who struggles with depression and was on Entocort for 9 months. I was closely followed by my GI and a psychiatrist during that whole time but I will say Entocort had VERY minimal effects on my mood. The reason being that Entocort is mostly absorbed in your gut and very little of the medicine is absorbed systemically.

Prednisone is another story. Due to my mood disorder, I could not take prednisone.

I hope that helps a little -- good luck!

Dr. Gabrielle Hodson (PhD, not MD) is a nutritionist in Utah. She works long-distance, and knows a lot about MC. She treats with major diet changes, not drugs.

I worked with her, not to control my MC, which was already under control, but to get off an antidepressant that I was on to control post-menopausal mood swings.

She's very good, but will want you to make major changes in your diet.
