Casein in Irish Cream Alcoholic Drink

Post by NaturalEl »

Is the casein in the alcoholic drink of Irish Cream removed in the distilling process like how gluten is cancelled out in the distilling of other drinks?

I tried searching the archives, but when I search for one item, so many other subjects come up. I'm fairly new here and still learning my way around the site.

According to the allergy statement on their website, Baileys contains about 50% cream (& milk protein) from dairy milk. So you can bet that it's loaded with casein. It may be low-lactose, but that's irrelevant to us Similar to most alcoholic blended products, the cream is surely added after the distillation process, so that the casein is still in the final product. Otherwise, all the casein would be distilled out, and that would remove all the flavor (which is in the casein). This is true for many wine coolers, also. That's just an educated guess, though — I've never tried it, and I wouldn't, because I produce antibodies to casein.

Thanks, Tex. I never thought to check their website.

The explanation of adding the cream after the distillation process explains how I am feeling today after having one shot yesterday on St. Patty's Day. Never again. More proof I can't do dairy when I was NOT the believer before. Been DF for over 1 month until that slip up yesterday.

Thanks again, Tex. I appreciate your knowledge and am thankful for you paving the way for us to learn for our benefit.

Around the holidays, I was buying a gift of Bailey's for my co-worker and noticed a dairy free version. When I looked at the label more closely though, I believe it was dairy/casein free but contained soy. When it comes to having a drink, I stick to a glass of wine, which I do well with. My daughter who is gluten/dairy free enjoys hard cider occasionally and doesn't have any problems.

Interestingly, Cassy Joy over at Fed + Fit recently posted a dairy-free Bailey's recipe.
