Hello,
Just this week, I was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia. It is a mild case, at this point and thankfully, the neurologist didn’t prescribe any drugs (which would set off my stomach). Instead, he recommended Vit B2 and Alpha Lipoic Acid to complement the B12 complex and magnesium I currently take. Both B2 and the Alpha Lipoic Acid contain magnesium stearate. Will that cause issues for me? I am still doing a very safe diet due to several flares over the last year or so (stress-related).
The B-12 complex liquid contains B2 already. Is it possible to take too much?
Is there anyone else on this forum who has Trigeminal Neuralgia?
Thanks so much.
Sharon

Hi Sharon,
B2 (riboflavin) is essential for certain stages of the digestion process. Any excess amounts are normally purged in urine, so it's unlikely that you would have problems from taking too much. That said, B2 can interfere with anticholinergic medications and the antibiotic tetracycline, but you shouldn't be taking any anticholinergic medications anyway, as they have been shown to increase the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's. And tetracycline carries an elevated risk of triggering an MC reaction.
If your kidney function happens to be compromised, though, and you are getting too much B2, associated symptoms would be itching, numbness, burning or prickling, and sensitivity to light. Yellow or orange urine is another symptom of excess B2, but that's a very common symptom that almost everyone sees if they're taking a B2 supplement, and it just means that you have more B2 in your system than your body needs (and your kidneys are eliminating it). So if you notice yellow or orange urine coloration a few hours after taking your medications, that's usually normal, and it will probably clear up within a few hours. If you notice it continuously, though (24x7), you may be taking too much.
At least that's my take on B2. Sorry, but I have to plead ignorance about Trigeminal Neuralgia.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Thanks, Tex. That is very helpful.
What about the magnesium stearate that is an ingredient in the Vit B2 and also the Alpha Lipoic Acid? Will that cause any problems for my LC?
Thank you.

Magnesium stearate is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry as a release agent and as a component or lubricant in the production of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. It shouldn't have any effect on your MC.
Alpha lipoic acid has been shown (in published research) to resolve certain types of chemically-induced ulcerative colitis in mice, so it's also unlikely that it would have any adverse effect on your MC.
Other than that, I'm not aware of any published research specific to MC.

Thanks so much, Tex. I sure appreciate your knowledge.
