Total Remission on LDN
Hey friends,
I haven't been here for a while. Wanted to say hi to all my longtime friends and to Tex.
I am now almost 7 years in total remission. I am still taking LDN but a very low dose. 1.5mg. I don't need more.
I am on a keto diet to keep my blood sugars normal. I am T1 since childhood.
I encourage everyone to take LDN. It gave me my life back. It can't hurt. It can only help. It's not dangerous. It's cheap and it's an immune system modulator. I never thought I'd be this healthy again in my darkest days. Give it a try.
And I want to thank Tex for being there for me for 3 years until I found LDN. And all of you for being a wonderful support group.
Much love to all,
Monique

No, I am no longer GF. Haven't been in several years. I am doing keto now for my diabetes so I am not eating any carbs derived from grains or sugars. My carbs come mostly from green vegetables. I bake with almond flour.
I still don't drink coffee which was one of my triggers. I am too scarred to try it. I never drink alcohol either. But I eat a lot of green vegetables with fiber which I didn't at the beginning of my journey.
My diet is protein (fish, chicken, eggs), dairy like cheese in small quantities and green vegetables.
That's it.

Hi Monique,
Great to see an update from you. As Tennessee Earnie Ford used to say, "Bless your pea-pickin' heart" for being in remission for seven years. That's the kind of update we love to read. (And the kind of update we love to write, also). And it's great to hear that you're following the keto diet, also. I have a hunch that's the healthiest diet that humans can eat.
Incidentally, are you sure you're not GF? Doesn't the keto diet rule out wheat? I agree that it's the key for controlling diabetes.
And I believe you're right that coffee triggers diarrhea, but I'm not so sure that it triggers MC. Here's why. I never drank coffee during my "pre-MC" life. I started drinking it maybe 8 or 10 years ago after I'd been in remission for 5 or 6 years. Each morning, the first cup flushes my system. But later in the day, it has no lingering effect. For me, this appears to be a good deal because I have an ileostomy. Any hint of constipation can mean a serious issue with an ileostomy, so I personally feel that a daily flush of the system helps to prevent possible problems due to slow motility or solid stool. And of course, with an ileostomy, that flush is WD.
But the fact that this flush is never followed by any sign of an MC reaction (continued WD), makes my point (I believe), that coffee triggers D, but not MC. If anyone has a different experience, I'd love to hear about it.
Great to hear from you.
Love,
Tex

Hi Tex,
So glad to hear from you! :) Yes, of course that I am GF since I eat no grains and carbs except for the ones that come in green vegies. I tried a few times years ago some bread and it had no effect on me....but the keto diet definitely rules out all things grains or carbs, so that's that.
Some three years ago I tried a cup of coffee at a friend's house. I got so ill I was folded in two. Coffee is poison for me! And you are right, it triggers D but not MC. Keto has been wonderful for my diabetes. My numbers (A1c) are nearly as good as a non diabetic. I highly recommend it for T2 and T1. It's a serious change in diet but well worth the effort. I don't need to lose weight but for those who do it's the diet to follow.
Much love,
Monique

Hi Monique - I am so glad that you are doing so well. I have been eating a keto diet for years, since even before it was called keto. My diet is primarily meat and green vegetables. I started eating this way when I realized I was on my way to type 2 diabetes (and a whole lot of other things). Dr Richard Bernstein (type 1 diabetic) was my first inspiration. I agree with Tex. This is the healthiest way to eat. Coffee doesn't effect me adversely and I drink it every day.

Hi Monique,
It’s so good to hear your update! Inspiring!
I mainly eat meat & veggies, too, and bake with almond or coconut flour. I use plantains also.
I drink tea and have a little coffee sometimes.
Being grain free has been a game changer for me, as I’ve been diagnosed for almost 7 years with MC, also.
Do you eat out?

That’s so great, Monique, that you are in MC remission and also controlling your diabetes with Keto. Wish LDN had helped me. Did you lose weight on Keto? For me, with no dairy, seems hard to maintain weight without some rice and potatoes. Are you now able to eat raw greens and salad, or do you cook them all? What kind of things do you make with almond flour?
Jean and Monique, did either of you have diarrhea issues with Keto? I have been eating that way for several months and have been battling it. I have added a keto "oatmeal" and psyllium husk which have helped some. I haven't had issues like this for years, since my MC was active. Oddly, a lot of people, including my sister have constipation issues. I started eating this way to help my blood sugar, which has already improved, and hopefully my blood pressure which seems to slowly be improving. Deb
Hi Deb - I do not have diarrhea issues with keto as long as I stay away from the foods I am sensitive to. What are you eating? I eat pretty much only meat and veggies and none of those keto products. Everything I eat is home cooked. I have normalized both blood sugar and blood pressure eating this way.

Deb,
One thing that I have learned the hard way is that sensitivities change over time. It is probably a good idea to start experimenting with eliminating things from your diet to see if it helps. I took an Enterolab test recently and discovered that I react to all grains, so am now more or less eating Paleo. It has helped a lot, and my BM's have firmed up. Wishing you all the best with figuring out what's causing the D.
Love,
Kari

Hi Deb,
with Kari. Back when I ordered my first EnteroLab tests (roughly 14 or 15 years ago), I tested safe for soy. 8 or 9 years later, I was having problems, so I ordered another test, and discovered that I was now sensitive to soy.
Also, I note that if that's actual oatmeal that you're referring to in your post, virtually all of are sensitive to oats, regardless of test results and claims by celiac "experts" to the contrary. The molecular structure of one of the amino acid chains of the avenin in oats is too similar to the molecular structure of the most reactive antigen in wheat gluten, so our immune systems tend to mistakenly treat oats as a source of gluten.

Thanks, Jean, Kari and Tex. It is not "real" oatmeal, just keto-friendly seeds and nuts. Y'all may or may not recall but my last Enterolab (of three) showed no/insignificant antibodies to soy, casein or eggs even though they were all positive the first two tests. I ate dairy throughout my MC and achieved remission by just avoiding gluten. I think my issues with keto are perhaps the increased fat though I'm not really pushing that. I tried some MCT oil and it nearly blew me up! The increase in roughage has seemed to help the last couple of weeks though. I have been hesitant to try anything "different" since MC but figured I'd been stable long enough to give it a try. I have also done the DayTwo genetic/gut bacteria test (I posted about this previously) that Mayo has invested in but won't know any results for several weeks. https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/disc ... ar-levels/
