Happy Monday! I am finishing Week 4 on Budesonide and also started the diet outlined here- starting a slow taper. I went from having WD the past 2-3 years to my first solid stools- I am super happy about that, but wanted to ask if anyone felt super constipated as they healed. I’m thinking it’s just because my colon isn’t used to holding solid poo and I’ve gone down in visits so much, but wanted to ask what others experienced. I am also having a little mucus as well as some very very faint and tiny amounts of blood- hoping it’s nothing to be worried about and may just be part of healing?
All of this is 1000 times better than watery d, but wanted to check to see if I should be concerned.

How many budesonide are you currently taking a day? Generally when you are constipated it is a sign to step down
to lower dose of budesonide. In general, listen to your body regarding the taper.
The mucus is normal.
Most folks don't have the blood but if you are super constipated that may be causing the blood.

Hi Brandy! Thank you for responding. Today was my last day for 9mg- tomorrow I step down to 6 to see how it goes.
That makes me feel better about the mucus for sure- thanks so much. For the blood- I know I have internal hemorrhoids, so maybe they just aren’t used to anything but liquid passing them by. Definitely not like blood I see when my ulcerative colitis flares so that is good.

Yup, time to reduce your Budesonide.
Constipation is not uncommon when treating MC with Budesonide. I had constipation when taking a full dose of Budesonide and then tapered to 6 MG. I wouldn't be in any hurry to taper though from 6 mg on down, generally speaking.
With the blessing of my GI doctor, who trained under one of the foremost docs at the Mayo Clinic with Microscopic Colitis, I went 5 weeks at 9 mg before constipation prompted the start of tapering. I went 6 weeks at 6 MG. 6 weeks at 3 mg. Then 6 weeks at 3 mg every other day. 6 weeks at 3 mg every third day. And finally 6 weeks at 3 mg every 4th day. There is some evidence that a slow taper can lead to a better outcome; sure did for me. Many doctors are too quick to taper. I've been in long term remission now for some time; completely controlled with diet. Gluten free, dairy free, low fat, low sugar, small meals, low fiber (steamed veggies vs raw) When you are through with Budesonide, diet is absolutely positively the key to control. That is really the basis of this forum.
For blood, pay close attention to COLOR. Generally, the closer the bleeding site is to the anus, the brighter red the blood will be. So bleeding from the anus, rectum, and the sigmoid colon tends to be bright red, whereas bleeding from the transverse colon and the right colon tends to be dark red or maroon-colored.
All the best to you on your taper! Please keep us posted, we love updates and we are ALL pulling for you! Things CAN get better!

Thank you so much!! My dr and I are going to stay close to see how I do and control the taper from there. I am in no rush! I am so thankful for the diet tips here. With my ulcerative colitis, I tinkered with diet a ton but the low fiber part didn’t hit home until I found this forum. I’m eating a very simple diet- chicken, zucchini, carrots, rice, and avocado. Banana smoothies. Bone broth. I’m really hoping I can achieve and stay in remission- constantly trying to figure this out is exhausting! I really appreciate everything shared here and the kind people.
**Edited to add- the blood is super dilute. Kind of a pinkish color? I’m guessing it’s not from very high up since it’s so light. My UC rectal inflammation is stubborn so may be related to that. Definitely not bleeding like I do during a full on UC flare, which is good.
