Chronic inflammation of the Gut may lead to BOOP PNEUMONIA. I think I am heading to BOOP PNEUMONIA, again. The first thing my pulmonologist did was put me on Prednisone. I took high doses of prednisone for several months and I was beyond miserable. I WAS SICK! Some of the side effect of high doses of Prednisone are weight gain, bone loss, purplish-red blotches and bruises, moon face, high blood pressure. Dr. Fine told me lung tissue and Gut tissue was similar. I found Dr. Gary R. Epler, a pulmonary consultant and he informed me that cataracts and aseptic necrosis of the hip, two additional side effect, are not reversible.
He informed me that Marcrolides, such as clarithromycin and azithromycin, are helpful. They may take longer, but it heal BOOP. I informed my doctor of his studies and that is all he uses now. His patients are healed. He ordered his book, "BOOP: You're the Boss." I do have his book and it has helped me as much as your book.

Hi Dorothy,
Thanks. I was familiar with all the side effects of prednisone, but I wasn't aware of the BOOP Pneumonia association with intestinal inflammation. But, of course, since inflammation is at the root cause of all diseases, that's not surprising I wasn't aware of Dr. Epler, either, but I agree with him that the macrolides are unique antibiotics that MC patients can almost always safely use. You'll note that azithromycin is my first (safe) entry under my antibiotics listing in the first post in the "Information on Medications" category:

One reason why they are effective for IBDs is their rare ability to control extremely diffcult-to-control bacteria such as those that cause leoprosy, and Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) bacteria (which cause Johnne's disease in cattle). Johnne's disease (in cattle) appears to be extremely similar to Crohn's disease in humans.
Despite the fact that the treatment programs to control these diseases are usually quite long, macrolide antibiotics seem to be safe for MC patients to use, and that's pretty remarkable. There are precious few antibiotics for which that can be said.
Thanks. If you have to begin a treatment, I hope it goes well.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Boop Pneumonia
Yes, Boop Pneumonia is inflammation. I saw an X-ray of my lungs when I was ill, and all you could see was white. That's inflammation. They did a lung biopsy to confirm. In some cases, Boop Pneumonia is deadly. It will kill you. It is not contagious. I am lucky that mine came on slowly and I survived. Boop Pneumonia is considered idiopathic, or they don't know what causes it, but in my humble opinion, I think my MC, and life-long silent Celiac disease probably caused my BOOP PNEUMONIA! So y'all, beware, BOOP Pneumonia is something you don't play around with or ignore. Dorothy

I think I'm okay. It's just when I have a deep cough and congestion, I get concerned. I take my Zyrtec and feel better. It can come back and Dr. Epler said he's seen several patients that had reoccurences two to three times.
