Digestive enzymes?

Post by Charles70 »

Hi All

Just wondering if there are any views on whether digestive enzyme supplements are beneficial for MC? I was only diagnosed with MC about a month ago and had been using digestive enzymes (Enzymedica) for a few months before that in my search for answers/solutions to my symptoms. I haven’t done the food intolerance testing yet (have removed gluten and lactose from my diet already) but I figure digestive enzymes couldn’t hurt before each meal? Or please let me know your thoughts. Apologies if this has already been covered elsewhere on the forum.

Thanks,
Charles

Hi Charles,

Digestive enzyme supplements are an interesting topic for MC patients. Whether or not they are helpful seems to depend on each individual's particular situation. Some members here claim to have had good results using them. My experience was not so good. I copied the quote below from one of my old posts made in response to another member's question about using enzymes posted way back in 2010.
I certainly don't claim to be an expert on enzymes and their roles in body chemistry, but by personal experience, I have found that "messing" with them does not always bring the desired results. When I was in the healing stage, one day I got the bright idea of using some enzyme supplements, to aid my digestion. So I bought a pricey concoction that sounded good in the ad, and within about 2 hours after swallowing the first capsule, I was sick as a dog. I vomited a number of times during the day, (ending with several sessions of dry heaves, late in the day), and it took me several days of feeling rough as a cob, before I got up the nerve to try eating solid food again. That pretty well sums up my position on taking enzyme supplements. I'm not saying that they might not be helpful for some individuals, but they certainly don't work as advertised for everyone.
That's from the thread at the link below.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
