Question about Zantac

Post by vivian »

I went to see the gastro doctor today because I have started to have excessive acid reflux. I went over a year without it and then I ate a cucumber a couple of weeks ago and all of a sudden everything that I eat causes reflux and heartburn. The doctor told me that he would prescribe Zantac and that it would be safe to take knowing that I have MC. Has anyone else had this problem and tried Zantac? I would hate to restart the whole MC problem over again since I have been doing pretty good for the past few months.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give. Vivian

Hi Vivian,

Your doctor is correct. Zantac is an H2 receptor blocker. H2 blockers are much, much safer than proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), as far as MC is concerned. Occasionally, they may cause a problem, so they're not 100 % safe, but no medication is 100 % safe for everyone. Kudos to her/him for not prescribing a PPI.

If you need something to control reflux, I agree with your doctor, an H2 blocker such as Zantac is probably the best way to go. They're safe, and effective. You can also buy a weaker version over the counter.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I feel a little better about trying them now and I am hopeful that it won't take long to get this under control. I almost feel like the cucumber bbq'd my throat and now everything is causing a problem. I was so happy for the past year to finally not have to deal with reflux that it is terribly depressing to have to go thru this again. Oh well, I am in a much better place than I was a year ago and I just have to remind myself of that. Have a nice week. Vivian
